Parallel Play
Sloan have completed work on their ninth studio album, "Parallel Play", which is due to be released on June 10th. In Canada, the album will be available on Sloan's own murderecords, distributed by Red Ink Music. In the USA, we are once again working with our friends at Yep Roc Records.
The album was recorded this winter at Sloan's studio space and features 13 new songs.
We will soon have news about our summer and fall tour plans. We'll also have some brand new audio and video posted before long, so be sure to check regularly for updates.

Wow! That is great news AND a big surprise. You guys have been on a pretty consistent every-two-years schedule since BTB. But this will be about a year and a half since NHTEOI. And I'm not over that one yet. :) AND I will be in Michigan this summer, so I won't miss the obligatory Detroit tour date, whereas you didn't...sniff...play Arizona on the last tour. So, to summarize, hooray!!!

Kee to Bala, late August, Entire Cities & Sloan, right? Your people call our people?
I kid. Seriously, though, looking forward to this record. Good on ya.

I already heard about this from YepRoc. And have asked them when the record goes on sale as an advance purchase.
Mike, do what you can to return to The Independent in San Francisco, rather than any other venue. It was a great place to see you, and very fan friendly. Have any time frame when you expect to be out this way?

Great news! By the by...does anyone remember talk of a "rarities" disc? I seem to recall an interview with one of the guys in the band and they said something to the effect of "Don't waste your money on the japanese imports because there is a rarities disc in the works..." I could be wrong.

nice! that's awesome news, can't wait to check it out!

I am so relieved, I've been itching for some new Sloan LOL You guys seem to know when to release new stuff...let us take in "Never Hear the End of It", and all of its awesome-ness....and then...you leave us craving for more awesome music....and it's a long and suspenseful wait....and then all of your fans are excited that their craving is finally going to be satified! Ah ha! (Wow I am weird...oh well)
I'm so excited, I'm getting the album immediately and I'm going to the first show that's closest!!!! ROCK ON!!!!
Valentina - April 19, 2008 3:57 pm
Yo! Parallel Play is fucking great. My husband Dave is helping put the record together, so we've been listening to it on heavy rotation . Don't anybody ask me to make a copy because I'd never do that BUT I just want to say that it ROCKS.
Very exciting.
Andrews' work is really really strong in it. He's got 4 songs! Wicked. "Never Hear the End of It" had Jay in the foreground, and this one focuses on Andrew, so I wonder if the next records will "feature" Chris and Patrick?
More music!
Parallel Play is awesome, I can't imagine anyone being underwhelmed by it.
Nigel Patel - April 20, 2008 8:09 pm
Can't wait!
I'll be there with the rest of the Legion of Detroit Area Sloan Fans, the LDASF, at the show.
It might be time to do the Pontiac Arts Beats & Eats festival again. (hint hint)
jen - April 21, 2008 4:13 pm
yay!
Lee Hower - April 21, 2008 5:52 pm
Mike, is there any plans to have website videos leading up to the release as you had last time, the Never See the End of It series? I thought they were terrific, and made waiting for the CDs even worse!

The YepRoc site has the album available for streaming as we speak:

BTW....I saw Patrick shopping for ice cream in No Frills on the weekend. Nice to see our hard-earned money isn't being wasted at Dominion or something.
Let's hope we have a hit on our hands!
Glen (aka Kash, Barn, KGB, Johne Rivers, Santa Claus Jr., or just plain old Barney Rubble) - April 22, 2008 10:23 pm
Thanks for the link, Blair! If ever an album has sounded like a collection of B-sides (in a good way), by the way the first three songs on this album sound... It seems like the group dove right back to "One Chord to Another" in feel, with a more modern and polished sound. WHOA! What was that chord progression for the solo in "All I Am is All You're Not"?!? I understood it (and loved it), I just wasn't expecting it at all!
And speaking of rarities, I'm the self-proclaimed "kid" who keeps repeatedly waving the banner for release of the rarities CDs (which now have grown to more than 2 CDs, or 4 vinyl, in length... guess I'll just have remove the "Sloan Party" tracks from it all).
Glen (aka Barney Rubble) - April 22, 2008 10:46 pm
After listening to 3/4 of the Parallel Play album, I'm happy to say I stand beside my previous comments: this IS the "B-sides" album, or the return to "One Chord to Another". Add to that my glee that Jay has made it to "Let's do Motown" mode with his "If I Could Change Your Mind"... And does the fact that "I'm Not a Kid Anymore" is the only song available for download make it the leadoff single?
Tyler M. - April 23, 2008 1:15 pm
Damn this is good. You guys rock a whole hell of alot! Awesome stuff!
Glen (aka Barney Rubble) - April 23, 2008 10:38 pm
Make "If I Can Change Your Mind" a satellite radio single alongside "I'm Not a Kid Anymore". Jay's Motownian slice of pop is just adventurous enough to attract alt-minds, but catchy enough to keep a head nodding.
The reCAPTCHA guard system on here just suggested Zeitgeist City. Whoa, there's an Andrew title if ever I've seen one. ;D
Jason - April 24, 2008 1:35 pm
Yeah! Looking forward to singing along to the songs from the new album at the next concert in San Francisco, whenever that might be. Sloan effing rocks.
Jerfrumfreehold - April 24, 2008 4:18 pm
yeah! yeah! yay! Sounds great!!!
Please come to NY/NJ/Philly quickly!!!
Ruh - April 24, 2008 10:46 pm
Why, YepRoc, do you have to start streaming the ENTIRE album so far before its release date? Some of us actually like waiting until an album comes out! (How revolutionary, I know.)
This is gonna be a tough stand, but I will not click on that button!
(These captchas are starting to make sense; I'm a bit thrown off.)
Geoff - April 25, 2008 1:15 pm
i'm listening to the stream AND i pre-ordered the new disc, just like i pre-ordered the last one. i can't get enough of these guys and i'm SO stoked there is already a new record coming out!
Brady - April 25, 2008 1:52 pm
It's incredibly hard to not listen to the stream. I caved and listened to Believe in Me, which is awesome. And according to some, it's the worst on the album, so I'm even more excited for June 10 now.
Andrew M - April 26, 2008 12:40 pm
I haven't been motivated to post on here for a long time, but I just felt the need to say how great I think the song "All I am is all you're not" is.
Kimi - April 27, 2008 10:26 pm
Woo! I don't know who is more excited my dad or myself? Haha.
A stop in Ohio is a definite must. Please and thank you!
I will not let myself cave into listening to the album on that site...
I will wait.
Streaming is overrated anyways.
I love receiving a new album all wrapped up in plastic.
Then trying my hardest to get that damn plastic off if there's no red strip.
Then smelling the new CD smell.
Sigh.
Putting that disc in and staring at the album insert.
Priceless moments are made when this process is completed.
Let the countdown begin!

DOGS
hey, just wanted to share a story about what this song means to me, personally. I forget the title of the song, but it's the one that goes "The dogs were great but they were small and I was the only one that they'd bite" I might be mangling this, but that's the gist of it.
Anyway, the lyric "I was the only one that they'd bite" has a tinge of sadness to it, I feel. It's kind of like a loss of freedom, in a way. Sharing your life with other people isn't always easy. If you gotta deal with dogs biting other people, suddenly it ain't so ok. People deal with that in different ways, my cat gets babied a lot less and my bunnies also take a back seat to people. That's just the way it is.
The song actually reminds me of a little boy I met in Bed Stuy. We had a flood in our house & a lot of stuff got wrecked, including the floor. A yr after it happened we got some wood put in to replace the damage. In order to save money I ended up hiring one guy to do the job, an individual, not a company. He had a son & I babysat the kids while he worked. His boy was 7 or 8 yrs old & he kept talking to me about his dog. I assumed the dog was still with him & I said it'd be ok if he brought it over one day. The little guy got real quiet for a min, then he said that when his parents got divorced they just left the animal locked in their empty apt by itself & moved away. It's weeks sometimes before new renters move in. Dunno who I felt worse for, the dog, or the kid who lost his best friend and his family stability all in one shot.
As an adult, I understand that you do what you have to do, especially if your life is really changing...But I did feel kind of cold towards his Dad after I heard that. It just changed the way I looked at him.
It's a great song. I love it.

Halifax in the fall please! Can't wait... CMW show at Supermarket got me all riled up for more.
valentina - May 8, 2008 4:21 am
I've had wicked witches wand in my head all day, CERTAINLY I believe in you, and all I am is all you're not is fantastic. I love fading into obscurity as a song but it made me worried to think maybe there was a fear of not being listened to in the future. Maybe I was reading too much into it, and I don't presume anything but my own personal take on a song, but I would like to say that fading is just not possible. Not with fans who adore you, it just ain't gonna happen! I'm glad you guys are "living the dream". It makes me happy to think you're happy because (selfishly) that means more music for me to listen to. Thanks for the music. Have I told you I love this band? Right. Now I'm gushing. Shaddup Val. xo

Just saw Jay and Chris on CBC Sunday morning and learned a new album was forthcoming. Great to know! I can hardly believe that nearly two years has passed since NHtEoI was released. Something to entertain me during the summer!
Ruby Mars - June 6, 2008 12:32 am
Two words: Victoria, BC!! Well, technically, BC isn't a word, and there is a comma in there, but still, I'm sure you get my drift. I can't wait to see Sloan again for the umpteen-billionth time! You are officially the greatest band in the history of great bands, and if I could afford it I would buy a Sloan of my very own so that I would never have to be without you. I suppose I could also just put your music on an MP3 player or something, but it's not nearly as entertaining a notion...
