August 7/2004 Olympic Island, Toronto
OK, is this the show of the summer or what? An idea that was hatched whilst Chris and I were sipping ginger ale on an afternoon flight as the winter chill approached is now a reality: An outdoor summer festival show where we could play with bands that we dig. By the time Chris ate all my free cashews, we had a compiled list of bands that we would love to invite. First, we talked to our friends and promoter kingpins Elliott and Jacob and asked "Can we do this?" and they proclaimed "Yes!..and on the Island it shall be." Next, we got on the phone.
Here's the bands who said "rad!"
For more info/tickets etc. check out www.olympicisland.com
There's still potentially another band or two to be added so stay tuned. Anyhow, hope you can make it ..and if so, come early because it's quality from top to bottom. Beach balls will not be shunned, but you might want to keep your old copies of 'Thunder Island' at home.
Right on. Thanks. See you there.
Jay F. and the Sloans

Sloan, please attend one of the summer fes in JAPAN too!
Even JET will be attending Fuji Rock Festival.... (-_-)
Krys - June 3, 2004 11:11 AM
Halifax... ok, that's all I have to say.
Jill - June 3, 2004 3:42 PM
It is an awesome lineup! And so worth driving from Connecticut to Toronto for a weekend. I can't wait to see Sloan for the 4th time this summer!
Kate - June 3, 2004 7:37 PM
Hey Jay, I'll be driving 1,000 miles to get to this show, so please wink in my direction. Uh, I'll be the one with her dress undone.
jennie - June 4, 2004 10:16 AM
Hey Jay!
We can't wait!!! It's a fun little road trip for my friends and I to a "Hot August Night". Just to let you know, I'm missing Sonic Youth Just for You guys, they are playing in Ottawa on the 6th, the day we are driving down. May I suggest inviting them to your already kick ass line-up?
P.S. Like I promised, I did not tell a soul about the other possible bands you were hoping to get. Keep up the great work!!!
Lisa (Halifax, NS) - June 4, 2004 1:20 PM
You're a pretty funny guy, Jay F. I'm sure a lot of your younger fans won't get the "Thunder Island" joke. Alas, I'm stuck here in Halifax on that weekend. Have a good time, all.
Kristin - June 4, 2004 5:22 PM
What a kick ass line up. Sammy and The Stills. Unfortunately I cannot attend due to the fact that I leave for Maine and Halifax too close to the date. Boo for me.
Kathleen MacMaster - June 4, 2004 7:05 PM
Oi Lisa! :)
I'm 3-4 hours away from ya and stuck here too. :) Don't worry, I'm sure Sloan will come back to Nova Scotia. Than we can rock our bums off!
I got the joke and I'm almost 20.. er... I'm not young, I'm feeling old now..
-quote-{"..By the time Chris ate all my free cashews.." *smiles* talking about cashews, I had some today and God it hurted one of my teeth.... I'm sure Chris did eat all your cashews Jay *laughs

Mac - June 4, 2004 8:46 PM
Kind of funny that because everyone's 'stuck' in HALIFAX, they can't see Sloan, the band their scene was built on...
Kathleen MacMaster - June 5, 2004 9:42 AM
I'm not stuck in Halifax, I'm stuck in Antigonish *smiles* and I'm not too far from there. Even if we are stuck on one gear, it doesn't really mean anything. Sloan will come down this way again. We just have to share. They go down that way, and they come down this way and vice versa. We just have to wait and waiting can be fun! I know can't wait, but I'll appreciate it when I see them again.
Sloan rules all bands on the road of music!

Nina - June 5, 2004 9:27 PM
Jay, my friend and I missed you in Buffalo! We were the two girls up at the front of the stage who met you in Toronto at the end of February. Thanks again for signing our liner notes! You told us about this concert then, so we really hope we can come.
michelle - June 7, 2004 12:32 PM

mikey - June 7, 2004 12:49 PM
how about adding joel plaskett emergency to the roster?
Lyle - June 7, 2004 6:16 PM
I agree about doing a Halifax show. And not a beer sponsored festival show like we've been getting the last three or four years....
Blah.
Vic - June 8, 2004 5:07 PM
Sloan,
Hopefully I'll be able to see you guys out there in August pending on how this cancer thing goes. Still awing at your show back in 2000 at the state theatre in lovely Detroit. Awesome show it was, well worth the trip across the border.
Buster Rimes - June 8, 2004 9:02 PM
Yo' U Guys rock!!!can't wait to see the hip hop event of the the year at the island olympics in T Dot.
lola - June 9, 2004 11:48 PM

neenee - June 10, 2004 12:57 AM
GET ROONEY TO PLAY WITH U
mike - June 13, 2004 11:47 AM
If you're still thinking of adding some new bands to the lineup-how about any of these past Sloan-openers: Tangiers, Meligrove Band, or High Dials. Or all 3!!!!!
Kathleen MacMaster - June 13, 2004 3:10 PM
Maybe Rufus Wainwright would be good on the list. I think they all like his music.... or is it just Jay? Anyways, I won't be at the Olympic Island but the Island will be rocked into small sizes of Islands when Sloan's there :) Play the song Losing California.. but change the name to Losing Olympic Island. If that makes sense... *smiles*

Jennie - July 5, 2004 2:41 PM
Since Sloan's tour of Canada for "Action Pact" has been done for a while now, I think it would be really fun and interesting if they were to just play all of their favorites from the 7 or 8 albums they've made. It would be awsome for us because any Sloan show is just good times, and fun for them because they'd be playing the songs that they really personally like. Honestly, wouldn't it be great if they didn't just have to play whatever they think everyone else wants to hear? I think so.
I can't wait to tell my friend that Pilate has been added to the bill.
Cheers!!!
Jennie
Scott Seabrooke - July 8, 2004 2:59 AM
the high dials would be a good choice i quite liked them in ottawa, but umm i'd rather there was less bands if it meant more sloan, pretty much w/e means more sloan. i am just tryign to work out getting my parents to give me a ride to deep river if possible, but sure as sloan was teh only band i listened to for a week straight i shall be in toronto and though i am humble by the great array of sloan fans the likes of which i had never known before meeting this website i shall still do my best to make my sceams audible.
will one of you show up to much music? they haven;t played sloan in ages and i even wrote them a letter. btu i guess you can;t stop them from playing billy tallent 3 times an hour, anywho its 3 int eh mornign but who needs sleep.
Julia Chisholm - July 13, 2004 7:57 AM
Hi Jay/ Sloan guys! I am residing in Antigonish right now and immensely looking forward to your show in my amazing home-town of Deep River on August 1st. If you're interested in bbq's or fun water activities on the Ottawa River whilst you're there, let me know and I'll hook you up!
Chantel - July 13, 2004 3:30 PM
heres another one for ya's BROKEN SOCAIL SCENE has been added . later kids!
Jennie - July 14, 2004 9:19 AM
Does anyone know if Feist is joining Broken Social scene for this show?
Denise - July 15, 2004 12:11 PM
My husband and I are from BC and we are heading to visit some good friends in Halifax (first time visit) from August 7 to 17. Any chance Sloan will be adding an extra tour date during that time! What an amazing show that would be!
mikey - July 19, 2004 11:39 AM
Though I love Pilate and BSS on the bill now, I can't help but worry this thing is filling out too much. Remember last year prior to the Rolling Stones show?
The lineup started out small and gradually grew, band by band as the weeks leading up to the show continued. Before you knew it, the show was an entire day long event and many of the early bands got to only play for 15 minutes (that's right-3 songs each, people).
Ya gotta watch that cause there's so many bands on the bill this time who are interesting and in need of more of a shot than 3 songs on, then get off.
Holly - July 19, 2004 10:05 PM
Can anyone tell me where exactly Deep River is??
Lady_Dee - July 20, 2004 11:10 PM
Hello Sloan guys,
I'm coming to see you at the Olympic Island with few of my friends, we are from Toronto so it will be close to our place. Anyway, I'm also glad that Sam Roberts is there too, I'm more then happy. You guys rock and see you on Aug. 7....
:-)))
Jennie - July 24, 2004 10:23 PM
Hey boys, guess what?!
Elle Magazine voted Hot August Night # 1 in the top five rock shows to catch this summer!!! That may not interest you too much, but it could possibly mean that the many attractive ladies that read Elle will decide to attend. Chris, this could be a good day for you my friend!!!
Hope ya'll are having fun on the tour!!!
Jennie
Stan Peters - July 28, 2004 11:52 AM

Looking so forward to the island show. Wouldn't miss a Sloan date in T.O even for kidney dialysis. We'll rock hard that day guys!
Mark - August 4, 2004 4:11 PM
Hey Patrick, Chris, Jay and Andrew. I'm just coming down from my high of seeing you guys at the Kee to Bala last Saturday night and having the opportunity to actually speak to Chris personally (if only for two minutes) before the show. That was the highlight of my 34 years !! You guys are incredible. In my humble opinion, no other band comes close to Sloan in technicial playing ability, intelligence, breadth of musical styles, stage show, humour and character.
Although I like Sam Roberts, The Stills and a few other bands that are on the bill, as far as I'm concerned, there is Sloan and then there is everybody else. I will be listening to the other bands at Olympic Island, but I will be ROCKING to Sloan!!
Chantel - August 5, 2004 2:46 PM

Audrie - August 10, 2004 10:51 PM
AMAZING show! So good! So awesome! I love SLOAN!!!!! Anyone know the exact set list...? I've tried to piece one together but my order keeps getting muddled up
Lydia - August 12, 2004 2:00 PM
"...Almost too good..." (Patrick)
You got that right, man!!
The show, the whole day in all it's entirety, was absolutely fabulous!!
Though we ('we' being the small group I attended with) missed the first two acts (and we regret it), we caught everything else and were more or less very involved (more on that in a minute), and it was great!! Buck 65 (we were in the pit for him) was awesome, and Broken Social Scene (for them, too) totally rocked my socks!! Two bands that I'm going to have to definitly get more into. After this, we relocated our between-bands-sitting-area from near the merch table to right beside the path leading from the VIP tent to backstage, which means our stalker needs were fulfilled with many rockers passing through that path, (the red carpet, if you will), such as Jay (You rock, thanks for the autograph and picture, and I hope you gave the leis to the other guys) Chris (thanks for pictures and hugs, you also rock) and Sam Roberts (and the gents in his band). Parick also made frequent sojourns down the path, but the oh-so-crafty Poppa Pentland tended to scurry past (with family in tow) whenever an act just got onto stage, or when someone was already signing autographs by the fence. We understand you probably wanted family time, so we still love you, Patrick.
The guys themselves on stage were awesome. All were truly wicked-cool and energetic as well as seeming to be having a great time, which, of course, is good for them and makes for a better show. Truly amazing, great set list (kind of disappointed that you didn't play 'Gimmie That', partially because it's a great song and partially because I had a $5 bet with my sis that you'd open with it, but oh well) and I think I speak on bahalf of all the fans when I say thanks for trying to conduct us during the "Slooo-oooan!!" chants, because they didn't really seem to work for more than a minute at a time.
Absolutaly can't wait to see you guys again, you always blow my mind, whether live or on CD
Thanks a bunch, and congrats to Jay for a job super-duper well done (very nice article about the show in the Toronto Star on monday, though they erroneously referred to it as Edgefest, which pissed me off quite a bit. They printed a correction the next day.)
...And for Chris - "And there are just so many of you...and not enough like me to love you"
I think thats what you were trying to get out of us.
Love to all the guys,
from Lydia
Lydia - August 12, 2004 2:02 PM
"And there are just so many of you...*BUT* not enough like me to love you"
Better luck next time, Lyd
from Lydia
Jennie - August 13, 2004 10:44 AM
It was such a great surprise to hear "Take it in" and "penpals"! I've seen Sloan about 6 or 7 times and have never heard those songs live, before Hot August night. Right on!!!

Great show guys. Please do another like it next summer. For a superstar Canadian band you guys should play here way more often. The Arcade Fire were a great touch, and The Stills are unbelievably talented. Please do another next year.
