Tonight we are about to embark on another road trip heading down to our Friday show at the Austin City Limits festival (Sept 17). A lot of the shows are in cities that we rarely (if ever) get a chance to visit. It will be a week of long drives to small clubs. Hope to see you at one of the shows--particularly if you live in Little Rock, or Indianapolis.
We should have some time to kill during our days on the road, so please post a reply if you have any recommendations for cool restaurants, used bookstores, cafes, record shops etc. that we can visit along the way.

Any truth to the rumor that they're will be some Maritime dates coming up?
Dante - September 12, 2004 2:23 PM
At the Vancouver Rain Show I was trying to push out of my mind the images of Billy Crudup getting electrocuted onstage in "Almost Famous." Thank goodness the boys got out of there alive.
Was that the first Sloan show ever to showcase Jay Ferguson using profane language onstage?
Jen - September 12, 2004 2:56 PM
Profane language?
What did he say?
Steve - September 12, 2004 3:40 PM
There is maritime dates. If you're in nova scotia...head to the savoy oct.2nd I have my ticket already. Front row. Centre. Allll right. See you there.
Lisa (Halifax, NS) - September 12, 2004 3:41 PM
Still can't believe they are not stopping in Halifax on their way through Nova Scotia.
bryan frazier - September 12, 2004 3:46 PM
well, you wont have to go far for good food while in little rock... sticky fingerz has several great selections: the original sticky fingerz chicken fingers, and my favorite, the blue hawaii sandwich. theres really no good record shops near without confusing directions, and coming from one musician to another you would undoubtedly get lost. i believe my friends the poeboys are opening for you guys so i will introduce myself. be safe. bryan

Jen:
Please refer to the review of the Vancouver show in the Tour Section I posted yesterday. There were some jerks in the crowd and someone hurled an eraser at Jay while he was singing, "The Lines You Amend." He yelled something back in response. It was profane, but I cheered loudly when he said it, because they shouldn't have to take that crap.
Mike Nelson - September 12, 2004 7:16 PM
Thanks for the reminder to put up those Nova Scotia dates. We weren't able to get other east coast dates put together at this time, but I think that we will be able to make it back soon. We are really looking forward to playing at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay. It has been awhile since we have played Cape Breton, and we are looking forward to seeing our Cape Breton family, friends and fans.

I have no voice left in the pouring rain @ Vancouver show!
I had a great time, thank you SLOAN.
And...don't forget about
Japanese SLOAN fans -_-.
They're waiting for you!
Catsby - September 12, 2004 11:10 PM
Thanks for letting public into the Vancouver show... oh wait.
Meanies.
Fishpaw - September 13, 2004 12:56 AM
The skies were either gonna let up or open up prior to you guys hitting stage, and either way it would have still rocked. Of course it absolutely poured and the show rocked hard despite of it. It was awesome to see everyone brave the elements, since it was looking pretty sparse for Limblifter and Pilate. A friend and I were really hoping that you would play "False Alarm," but the playlist was killer. I especially enjoyed that you didn't play all radio-heard songs. Hoping you guys get back to Van quick for a longer and hopefully indoor show!
Patrick Coffey - September 13, 2004 11:04 AM
I am really excited about the Houston show. I've seen Sloan only once in D.C. when they opened up for Pete Yorn. Since you are in Texas, I would recommend a barbeque place down the road from the venue. It is called Pizzitola's. If you just head West On Washington and make a right on Shepard, it will be on your left. It should only take three minutes to get there.
Torin - September 13, 2004 12:42 PM
Damn Sloan. you guys had a killer show in Vancouver. Thanks for turning an otherwise boring rainy day into the best damn concert i've ever been to. You guys were tough braving the rain and all, along with the flying erasers. Come back soon. I'm thinking it should be in the snow next time.
Kyle - September 13, 2004 2:05 PM
If you read this before your show at Little Brothers in Columbus tonight and have time, check out the Book Loft in the German village. It is a book store with over 30 rooms of varying sizes, each with its own particular theme.
Marcy - September 13, 2004 3:09 PM
When you all are in St. Louis tomorrow, there's a cool record store called Euclid Records with the best selection of used Jazz albums, if you are so inclined. Such great graphics on that stuff, as well as all the obvious reasons to buy them. (Euclid is South on Big Bend Blvd from the Gargoyle, about 4 miles; on your right.) The shop's owner, Joe, will be at your show, and my husband, who got me into you all in the first place, used to work there back in the day. Gotta support the home team. From there you should come hang out at our house right around the corner... our two year old daughter, Tallulah, might serenade you with "Take the Bench". Either that, or Ring Around the Rosie. Can't wait til the show--it's been like 5 years since you've been here, and everybody's stoked.
Morrigan - September 13, 2004 4:11 PM
Any plans to play Chicago while you're in the midwest guys? You know you love the Metro...!!
Jennifer Leduc - September 13, 2004 5:10 PM
I don't expect for you to remember me since I've only met you once before (the show with Jet at Stubb's BBQ ; I wore a "Canadian Girls Kick Ass" T-shirt). I was able to submit photos to the website for the July 20th show.
Anyway...if you're looking for places to check out near Zilker Park, I think that I can help. Across the street from the festival grounds, you can find Barton Springs. It's still pretty warm in Sept and it's a great place for a quick, cool swim (the water temp is about 68F). Going down Barton Springs Rd, you can find lots of places to eat--Chuy's, Shady Grove, Romeo's, Green Pastures (for BBQ). Flipnotics is a good spot for coffee and there is a cool clothing store below the coffeespace (also called Flipnotics). Just off the corner of Barton Springs and Lamar, you can find a music shop (Musicmakers) and Peter Pan Mini Golf. If you go north on Lamar, at 6th and Lamar, there is Waterloo Records and Book People as well as Whole Foods Market and Amy's Ice Cream. If you go south on Lamar, you can find South Austin Music, Saxon Pub, and Taco X-Press (yummy breakfast tacos and a cool statue of Maria, the owner, on the roof).
See ya round,
Jennifer
Jen - September 13, 2004 6:02 PM
Wow Dante! So Jay actually said F*#K you to that looser?! He's so sweet and calm that it's hard to picture him saying that. It's also puzzling that someone would sit through a Sloan show that they obviously aren't going to enjoy, just so that they can pull of the master plan of attack of hitting a band member with AN ERASER!!! How silly.
Can't wait for Sloan to haed East! This gives me a somewhat reasonable excuse for a little road trip!!!
See ya!
Jen
Charlotte - September 13, 2004 7:06 PM
Hey! I hope you guys can play a show in Kingston, ON, sometime in the near future. We love you here!
Charlotte
Johnner - September 13, 2004 11:06 PM
Woah Finally! Sloan finally comes to Indy. I won't have to drive to Chicago/Ohio to see them this time around. Hopefully there will be more than a handful of fans there...
Kristinugget - September 13, 2004 11:41 PM
Boo-urns. Why does Vancouver get a show and not Oakville? Come play at Sheridan again!!!
Have fun on the road!

Greg Franklin - September 14, 2004 2:46 AM
I've got a crew coming in from Kansas City for the St. Louis show. I'll recommend hitting Vintage Vinyl there in the Loop for some good record scourings. I can't completely remember the name of the place right now, but up the street from Vintage Vinyl is an AMAZING lebanese restaurant that blew my mind last time I was in town. It's right on a corner and has an orange-y interior. It's 3 or 4 blocks up from Vintage Vinyl. and if you guys stay in St. Louis for the night, get up early the next day and hit THE CITY MUSEUM downtown. it's this old factory that someone welded busses and planes and whatnot to; it's a kids playground, but it's this giant crazy "found objects" sculpture. well worth the extra 6 bucks or whatever the cost is.
my gal and i are coming out to the austin show as well; this time it's MY birthday present to get to see Sloan live! are you guys planning any sort of late show there in austin friday night?
Gregory Franklin - September 14, 2004 2:54 AM
oh, and can i put in a request to hear "the NS"???
al - September 14, 2004 9:26 AM
howdy! can't wait for the st. louie show!!!! For great people watching excitement, hit up downtown Clayton. A lot of clueless-suit-wearing-trend watching people down there. Food and stuff...nothing good really. I agree with Marcy that Euclid Records is perfect. Great stuff and the people over there are nice ->excellent customer service (no i don't work there)! Oh and I was over there 2 days ago and I couldn't find a "Used" album of yours!!!!
so as far as food goes, i guess just play on the streets of the U-City Loop and people will throw food at you. if you don't want that, go to Cicero's. Great pizza and excellent beer selection.
Chris - September 14, 2004 10:46 AM
Hey I saw you guys at the Olumpic Island Show. It was great especially the spontaneous poetry from Kevin Drew on 500 up. Thank you so much for putting that show on there were a bunch of great bands I have never heard. The arcade Fire was awesome. I am excited to see you tonight in St. Louis. Al is right about Euclid Records it is top notch. Have fun tonight. People watching is fun anywhere. St. Louis is a good town. Have fun come back again and bring the Halifax pop mafia. Maybe some big indie show with Mike O'Neil, Joel Plaskett, The Local Rabbits.
al - September 14, 2004 12:13 PM
I'm sorry. I meant that if you play at the U-City Loop, people will not actually throw food at you. I meant they may give ya some. Everyone there is nice and always welcoming.
I appreciate that you guys are playing tonight here in St. Louie!!! Thank you!!!!!!
jason - September 14, 2004 2:07 PM
Dallas - Good Records is a GREAT indie-record shop on Good Latimer, just right around the corner from your venue that night, Trees. And 2 streets over on Commerce is the Best Burger in Dallas at the Angry Dog. Or some good old Tex-Mex at the Taco Lounge, also on Commerce.
If you do an in-store at Good Records, I'll wash your bus. Good times.
Will - September 14, 2004 3:31 PM
Suggestion: The most amazing vinyl record outlet you'll ever find:
The Record Exchange -- the Hampton Ave. location is a former St. Louis Public Library branch that has been completely taken over by vinyl. You can find virtually anything here. Here's a blurb I wrote for a travel site.
Music lover's paradise — Visitors who still have a working turntable at home will kick themselves if they don't take a detour to the Record Exchange. There are two locations, one on Cherokee Street just west of Antiques Row and another on South Hampton Avenue in the city's southwestern corner. Both shops are large, but the Hampton Avenue location, which occupies an entire decommissioned St. Louis Public Library branch, really is something to behold. LPs in every conceivable genre, many of them rare, are stacked floor-to-ceiling and in a sea of bins. If you can't find what you're looking for, ask owner Jean Haffner or one of his employees — odds are that it's lurking somewhere in the store's overstock. Serious vinyl junkies will want to ask Haffner's permission to check out the second floor, reserved for 45s. Not a vinyl junkie? The Record Exchange has made a few concessions to progress and now stocks a healthy selection of used compact discs as well as an impressive selection of second-hand DVDs.
The Hampton Avenue location is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. 5320 Hampton Ave.; 314-832-2249.
The Cherokee Avenue store is open daily except Sundays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. 2831 Cherokee St.; 314-771-0480.
Jeremy - September 14, 2004 4:59 PM
It might qualify as some kind of miracle that you're coming to Indy. I'm psyched. There's a good Japanese restaurant called Sakura near Birdy's. See you Monday.
Joel - September 14, 2004 6:31 PM
i second everything jason has said regarding dallas, especially sol's taco lounge. as far as instores go, the boys won't be playing good records, but they will be playing a short acoustic gig. info can be found here:
http://www.dallasmusicguide.com/news.htm
since i write for the DMG, i'll try and make it down there. looking forward to thursday night.
RickB - September 14, 2004 7:11 PM
Since my departure from the Motor City I have been in Sloan withdrawl. Yo guys it's time to play Vegas.
DeeDee - September 14, 2004 8:03 PM
hey, you know whats fun, playing 2 Vancouver shows in a row that I couldn't even go to if I wanted to.
Kevin - September 15, 2004 12:59 PM
While in dallas you should check out Bill's records and tapes. Its a great indie record shop. Phone # (972) 235-1496
Dave Hudson - September 15, 2004 1:28 PM
I too would like to see another Chicago gig at the Metro! If not there, your always welcome to come jam at the House, (The yard is big enough to hold a thousand or two SLOAN fans... So lets get Rock'n!)
Jennifer Leduc - September 15, 2004 2:44 PM
Just making a slight correction to my earlier post. The BBQ place on Barton Springs Rd is called the Green Mesquite. Green Pastures is an entirely different restaurant in S Austin. Just a little further from Zilker Park, I also recommend Magnolia Cafe (great place for a late nite bite to eat -- locations on S Congress and Lake Austin Blvd). S Congress is also a good place to shop during the day and clubs/restaurants at night (Continental Cafe, Trophy's, Jo's Coffee, Guero's, El Sol y La Luna, Hotel San Jose, etc).
Ruh - September 15, 2004 7:12 PM
I know the band was up in Edmonton last week, and they did a gig at the 2003 Stampede, but is there anything else scheduled for Western Canada in general and/or Calgary specifically? I've actually NEVER seen them in concert (circumstances were not so hot for either of them, as I was in Ontario for the Stampede last year - ACK!). It'd be good to have you guys out here.
Heather - September 15, 2004 9:47 PM
Thanks for coming to Little Rock but why Sticky!! I would be at that show right now if it wasn't at the great wonderful Sticky. All those people know I am under 18 too, so it isn't like I could sneak it. I tried it at Phantom Planet. It isn't happening! Man, I would have been much happier not knowing about this show.
kevin - September 16, 2004 12:02 AM
really?!? is sloan playing at ackard dart station in dallas?? wow, that sounds incredible, what a treat to see sloan twice in one night IN DALLAS TEXAS!
Mark - September 16, 2004 10:35 AM
Dear Sloan,
I have enjoyed your records since I discovered "Underwhelmed" on a compilation CD.
I like all of the records a lot.
I particularly am interested in "Before I Go" and "People of the Sky". I was interested in the discussion scene in the "Second Hand Views " video. The one where you suggested you might quit.
There was a video clip on the website last week where you talked about "Being a cog in a large machine that you will be part of when you grow up"
I would like to ask questions about your philosophy and world view. It is so very very interesting.
About Houston.
There is a wonderful art space called "The Artery" It is a sculpture garden and performance and gathering space near Herman Park. You can get the address online, mapquest etc. You could just drop by any time and crash whatever is going on. There are life drawing classes, exhibitions of paintings and scupture, outdoor sculpture, performance, outdoor films.
There is the "Diverse Works" art space. It is just down the road from Mary Janes. Its a neat public gallery, performance space.
There are some good vegetarian restauraunts on westheimer. Tien Rein is one.
Indian Food, Khyber on Richmond, Shiva in the Rice Village.
The Whole Foods deli is a good place to eat.
You could visit KPFT 90.1 on 419 Lovett Boulevard.
That is in the Montrose neighborhood. That is south of Mary Janes across Buffalo Bayou.
When you are in Austin, you really really should go see Pace Bend park. It is 20 miles west of Austin off Highway 71. The park is a giant pinensula formed by a bend in the junction of the Pedernales River and Lake Travis. There are limestone coves and cliffs and very clean spring water sitting in limestone rock. The water is lightly carbonated and perfect temperature. The sun is hot and the earth is desert like. The contrast is wonderful. It's one of my favorite spots in Texas.
Also in Austin you should check out Barton Springs pool at Zilker Park. That's in downtown (south central) Austin. It's a great natural rock pool that is continuously being filled by springwater from the Edwards Aquifer.
Sincerely
Mark

You guys got to come halifax soon, its been a while sence i seen you. You know not just for me but mostly.
kevin - September 16, 2004 8:13 PM
Thank you Chris and Patrick for playing this afternoon at the train stop. I hope you guys are not too upset about the turnout there. The guy that organized it did not promote it. Reguardless, we had a great time, can't wait to see you all at Tree's tonight. Thank you again.

Sloan- I think you should take a 'detour' to New York :)
I want to make it to the PA show but I have to do sound for some poo concert in Manhattan. (hooray for work)
Does anyone know if the Austin City Limits show will be on TV? They air some on Saturday nights around midnight.
Melissa :)

RE: Pittsburgh
You guys may want to check in with Mr. Small's....Hurricane Ivan's remnants blasted through Pgh Friday and left Millvale completely flooded. Mr. Small's is pretty high up, but Route 28 (the worst road in Pgh on a dry day) saw a little damage and some resulting detours. Many areas of the city are on restricted water use as I type this on Sunday. (And we wonder why no one ever comes here....)
As for where to go before the show, you are pretty isolated out in Millvale (sorry, Millvallians, but you know it's true). If you can get to Bloomfield there's Paul's CDs and some good, cheap places to eat. There's a nice Thai place across the street from Paul's. Squirrel Hill has some good vinyl options, too.
Pittsburgh is rather sprawling and hard to navigate. I usually take the day AFTER Sloan concerts off, but if you need a driver the day of the show I offer my services up to you! You'll enjoy The Breakup Society, too....Ed Masley is a devoted Kinks fan, if that gives you a hint. Thanks for giving Pittsburgh another chance. See you Tuesday!
Robyn
Dave - September 20, 2004 12:11 PM
It appears the Pittsburgh show is cancelled. The venue cancelled all shows this week. If you guys need a floor to crash on, let me know. This is very upsetting.
Joel - October 12, 2004 7:51 PM
Please come back to Vancouver again soon. I'd love to see you guys at the Commodore.
