Miranda - April 29, 2005 3:58 PM
CAN I PLEASE BE IN YOUR NEW VIDEO!!!!
IT'S MY NEW GOAL IN LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ryan P - April 29, 2005 5:04 PM
You guys should make a video in which you all gain "rock n' roll" superpowers. Their enemies: uumm, how about Simple Plan, just because I hate that band (you can change that if you want, haha). Chris becomes "the charmer" and gains powers that enable him to woo anyone into falling in love with Sloan using his charm, Patrick becomes the "renegade rocker", using his too cool to care attitude to break down Sloan's enemies, Jay becomes "the collector" and uses his record collection to make thier enemies relaize that, of all the great music in the world, that particular band is not part of it. Finally, Andrew becomes "the intellect" in which he uses his superior knowledge of life (he is, after all, an artist) to convice their enemies that they might as well just give up now, because Sloan are the only true artists of the music buisness anymore.
Ok, that's my idea. Now you all know that I have too much time on my hands and that I was a huge comic book geek when I was a kid.
Ryan P - April 29, 2005 5:13 PM
Oh, I forgot to add that at the end of the video, once they have defeated their enemies, Sloan should say something cheesy, like "Now you're all used up!"...you know, just so that the song at least somewhat goes along with the idea, haha.
Chris - April 29, 2005 5:16 PM
You should make a video featuring Patrick dying his hair
Morrigan (Beth) - April 29, 2005 6:08 PM
Oi, why all the mustaches?!?! Did I miss the memo that bad facial hair is the new black??!?
Miranda - April 29, 2005 7:38 PM
I agree with Beth!
Boo to Chris! Leave Patrick and his hair alone. It's perfect as is!
I love your idea Ryan P. I hope to come up with something as clever ; )
nina - April 29, 2005 7:44 PM
Cripes on toast, a THIRD video? I haven't even been able to see the first one...I'm suffering Sloan withdrawl over here!
Anywho, have a great trip to Coachella, boys! Please do some local stuff during the summer!
Nik - April 29, 2005 7:51 PM
Good luck at Coachella and hope you have a grand time! I can't wait to see what concept you guys came up with for second All Used Up video (and even the third)! BTW Chris, you look like such a cutie in your costume in the second version ;)
Hannah - April 29, 2005 8:24 PM
Oh, so there are "fake" moustaches in the new video?
Thank god! Chris gave us all a scare again yesterday at The Edge.
And Nik, sounds like you've been privy to some info on the "All Used Up: Redux Edition" video.
(Cutie in a costume??? Very interesting...)
Mariko - April 29, 2005 10:02 PM
ewww... moustaches. Looking forward to it though!
imintoit - April 30, 2005 5:34 AM
I did see Chris on e-talk daily today wearing a bellboy uniform and sporting a cheesy thin-styles mustache...it was icky.
N~
xo
Marc - April 30, 2005 5:42 AM
3rd video concept.. hmm... how about some hot photage of Coachella? That'd be cool. Throw in some other bands if you can. Weezer in a Sloan video?? The video could contain little side clips of other artists playing the song. With a hot backstage jam atmosphere, I'd really dig a video like that :)
If that doesn't fly... I don't know... Show some senior citizens rockin' out. They're all used up, right? Then again... Good Charlotte did that... so.. don't.
Lydia - April 30, 2005 1:56 PM
Ryan P, I LOVE your idea. I've always wanted to see Sloan with magical Superpowers. Yeah, that's all I got to say
Ian McCartney - April 30, 2005 5:05 PM
what all this about e-talk? would it be possible to be provided with a link for that..? and I must say the super power concept sounds like fun!
Nik - April 30, 2005 5:50 PM
Well, Hannah, Imintoit beat me to it! I saw the same clip on eTalk too. Although, the pencil thin moustache didn't bother me as much.
Li - April 30, 2005 9:47 PM
Hey! I have a treatment: RACECAR DRIVERS
in the beginning intro, it shows all 5 of ya getting into your racecars and looking all competitive and pumped up.
then when the lyrics start, the race starts and pat (and chris) are singing in their car while racing the other 4 guys of sloan.
stuntmen will be required cuz one by one, you guys all crash (safely) or "use up" all of your gas except for pat, who wins the race and gets surrounded by lots of alcohol (and girls maybe) and gets a big ass trophy.
and in between the racing shots, shots of sloan playing the song in their racing outfits will be included.
yea, and btw, i'm a senior in high school and i'm gonna be a film student at USC next year, so if you need any help or if i can just help out like setting up a light, email me. please.
SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-AAAAANNNNNNN!
Miranda - May 1, 2005 1:41 AM
I'd like to see a repressed private school theme. Complete with Sloan in sassy school boy uniforms. Something with a Rushmore vibe to it. Perhaps you could talk Jason, or one of the Wilson brothers into doing a cameo. They could introduce a new club for the approval of the Headmaster.... Rock Club!!!!
Anyways, the idea is that Sloan plays at a private school assembly/talent show , but as usual all the teachers are cranky and not into it and the prim and proper kids are bored and apprehensive. Then they all get enlightend by the SloanRock and start getting all into it like in the "if it feels good do it" video. Kids could just rush the stage to scream and dance or a crazy rebelious riot could ensue perhaps?
I don't know about other people, but I always hated going to an assembly and having a band play. The ones at my school were never any good and I think alot of people would have liked Sloan to play at their school, at least I dreamed about it.
The joke to me is that Sloan wouldn't be playing themselves. They'd be playing students. They could be those "cool" guys that never grow up and still hang around school wayyyy after graduation to just hang out and jam. I guess this is where a fake mustache or two will come into play.
For a location, I'm thinking the school they use to film Degrassi for that added touch of class.
Hannah - May 1, 2005 9:52 AM
HA!! So Chris Murphy would play the letch character that Matthew McConaughey played in Dazed and Confused.
"That's what I love about these High School girls man. I get older, they stay the same age."
And unlike you, I loved when bands played the assembly at school, but that is cause we had the likes of Hawksley Workman and many other great talents attend my school.
Brent - May 2, 2005 8:12 AM
Where's the video for Try to Make It?
Amy - May 2, 2005 11:04 AM
HAhahah! Trusty white Mercedes.....I love it!! Would y'all please get on it with the Toronto show date/location....I'm about to explode over here! Miss you all like mad!
amy!
Morrigan (Beth) - May 2, 2005 3:06 PM
Hmm, interesting idea Miranda, and as much as I'd like to see them in schoolboy garb, it might be too 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'? Been there done that?
I'm going back to the bellboy thing someone mentioned - Murphy as a bellboy = yes please. Me likely. Which naturally brings me to Quadrophenia, so I'm thinking they ride up on scooters & start a Brighton Beach-style rumble with a crappy rival Canadian band (I'm looking at you, Nickelback..), and they win the brawl because they're still in bellboy uniforms and Nickelback dies laughing.
OK, Fellini I am not.
Holly - May 2, 2005 4:13 PM
Well, I just thought of an idea for the 3rd video...I think it would be fun to do sort of a scrapbook of a bunch of past sloan stuff, since the song is off of a greatest hits album. Sort of like a sloan montage. You could have this in between scenes of Sloan doing their usual kickass video performing!
Anyways, just a thought...
I miss you boys a lot, and i'm very much looking forward to the release of the new album! I really hope that you'll swing out Hamilton way again this year, and PLEASE play the Kee To Bala!! It wouldn't be a proper summer without a trip to see you guys there.
Keep on rockin'!!!
Mary - May 2, 2005 4:56 PM
sloan + a big pile of sandwiches = third All Used Up video.
enough said.
Hannah - May 2, 2005 5:31 PM
Holly, they are playing the Kee on July 2nd. Already got my tickets.
Morrigan, I like your thinking.... I'd like to see our dapper boys beat out those nasty "Rockers".
"We are the Sloan, we are the Sloan, we are, we are, we are the Sloan!!!"
Jasper - May 2, 2005 9:10 PM
How about wearin' KISS costumes?
Joe - May 3, 2005 8:00 AM
Well, the Beatles did film three different promotional clips for "Hello, Goodbye", so why not Sloan? Personally, I liked the idea's of the boy's taking examples from movies and other concert performances and then making them their own. It took more then a few people that I know a long time to realize that "The Good in Everyone" was taken directly from the opening segment of "Easy Rider". Seeing as the "this was filmed on the Ed Sullivan show" type video has been played to death by other groups (Outkast and Nirvana, to name a few), the suggestion I make is toi do the next video for "All Used Up" look like some archival Ramones footage" Four guy's in leather, ripped jeans and t-shirt's, a grimey looking club atmosphere, and ball's out type poerformance. Now that. I think, would kick some serious ass. Good luck with your endeavors boy's, keep rocking.
Mike Stasyna - May 3, 2005 9:21 AM
Have the third video on one of those old pirate ships going through Toronto harbour. The only catch is that the boat is filled with live animals.
scot - May 3, 2005 6:57 PM
3rd video idea:
Takes place in a cemetery (during the day.. alot of vibrant colours) the band rise from their own respective graves and begin to play until the day turns into the night.
yea, dig?
Katy D - May 4, 2005 12:13 AM
hmm The super hero idea sounds promising. Another suggestion would be to dress up as hobos. You could play inside refrigerator boxes and such! Either way, any new Sloan video will be brilliant.
wazza - May 4, 2005 3:50 AM
how about a big favour and you guys come with me to hong kong and help me propose to the girl that i want to spend the rest of my life with ...
i'm sure we could tie in the meaning of the song with helping me get the girl ...
how about it? up for a challenge sloan?
i love you guys ... you guys rock
Kathleen MacMaster - May 4, 2005 1:12 PM
I don't feel I got any good ideas... I got one but it probably be a sucky one. If there's going to be a fake mustache involved, it be so good to see Jay the one wearing it.
-Mary Kathleen MacMaster
Holly - May 4, 2005 2:37 PM
I love Scot's idea of the cemetary!!!
Yeah so I just picked up my copy of A Sides Win, and it's amazing! However, i went to stick it in my DVD player and was disappointed when i realized that theres no DVD portion to it...then i came on the website and discovered that there will be a "deluxe edition" which HMV didn't seem to have. Boooourns! Anyways, the album itself is awsome, but could anyone tell me if the DVD will also be sold seperatley? I'd rather not buy the CD again if I don't have to.
ROCK ON!
Holly
Chris - May 4, 2005 2:39 PM
The DVD is sold with the CD in the deluxe edition.
Kathleen MacMaster - May 4, 2005 3:01 PM
How do you know if you're getting the deluxe editon? I know I'm unpatiently waiting for the deluxe version it to arrive in the mail.
When I went to my local store yesterday, I think I just saw the cd only and it was almost sold out.. but knowing me, it was probably the cd/dvd package.. but $16.99/plus tax? It looked too good of a deal for the cd and dvd... ack!
-Mary Kathleen MacMaster
Marc - May 4, 2005 3:41 PM
I'm listening to my A-Sides Win now... I got mine for 15.99 at Future Shop... and it has the DVD :) Rock on, all.
-Me. (freekin' eh!)
chris - May 4, 2005 4:13 PM
How's Murphy's new song on the album? I preordered it from maple music so I won't get it until at least next week.
holly - May 4, 2005 4:57 PM
Nooooo! I want the deluxe edition!!!! :( I wish i had known before i bought just the CD! Oh well, looks like i'll be buying it again....i'm sure the DVD will be worth it anyways...but still BOOO HMV!!!
Holly
Melissa - May 4, 2005 8:49 PM
Here is a GREAT video idea!!!
The members of Sloan announce more tour dates so I don't have to check the site every hour and get no work done!!! lol. I need some live Sloan in NY :)
Ahhh the wait! :>)
<3 Melissa
Beth - May 5, 2005 1:23 AM
chris - if you're referring to Try To Make It, it's quite great!! Personally, I'm happy to hear them doing melodic power-pop again, the rockriffs-circa-1973 thing is ummmm.. All used up? *ha* To me (and the band might cringe to hear this) the song sounds a lot like Squeeze's "Up the Junction"... not altogether a bad thing! I've heard it live 2x now and it translates really well live too.
Lydia (Chris Army) - May 5, 2005 11:35 AM
I have an idea, but it may have already been done. I know they used to do it on Drew Carrey. Make the video into a huge "What's wrong with this picture" type thing. Then you can give out prizes to people if they get it all right (or not).
And if my idea sucks (and it kinda does) you can use Ryan's idea, which I still love. I also like Morrigan's idea, but I DO NOT like her e-mail address
Also, I love Try To Make It
Dave Read - May 5, 2005 12:12 PM
yeah Melissa, I keep checking for the Sloan dates in NYC too...hurry up and list 'em, please! I'm actually moving to British Columbia in June so I hope I don't completely miss them by going the opposite way across the country...
Waiting on the Deluxe Edition, I hope it's in my mailbox today...
Allegra - May 5, 2005 6:05 PM
Do any of you also have trouble iTuning A Sides Win? The copy control makes it come out garbled and unrecognisable. I don't think it's my computer because I just added a different CD and everything turned out fine.
But the DVD kicks ass! I had to pay extra, but it's worth every penny. Try To Make It is the best Chris song since his songs off of BTB.
I don't have any ideas for the new video, but I hope it involves a lot of extras.
Lydia - May 6, 2005 11:37 AM
Whatever you end up doing, it has to start off with Andrew saying "Let's play!! Weh Weh!!"
Julie - May 8, 2005 8:19 PM
I have a really good idea for a video but after hearing all those other ideas I think I'll save it for the next time you guys are looking for ideas. But for a sneak peak: it involves a massive train bridge and a kick ass outside show. More details are available.
Geoff - May 9, 2005 3:38 AM
Title: All Used Up
Setting: Old Gas Station in a Small Town
(pick any small village/hamlet in the prairies/cental Canada while the band is on tour).
The band is playing in front of the gas pumps (or on top of the gas station).
The place is very dry, hot and gritty. The video is shot with cross processed, grainy colours (yellow, gold, brown hues).
There is a big sign saying â??Gasolineâ? and another big sign saying â??Everything Must Goâ?. (or maybe saying â??Last Chanceâ?).
There is a long line of dirty cars and SUVs waiting in front of the gas station.
Swirling images of gasoline, interspersed with flashing neon lights are intermixed throughout the video.
Band members could be having a water fight with gasoline nozzles (... but that might be a little TOO overboard).
Miranda - May 9, 2005 12:42 PM
I'm liking your idea Geoff. It beats mine. Water fight you say? Hmmmmmm.
G - May 9, 2005 1:33 PM
Instead of making 2 more videos for the same song, why not make one for Try To Make It? It's a better song. I do think that the All Used Up video is bad (the first of ALL their videos I've disliked - I think the rest are superb), but I don't think it's worth making another video for it because I don't think the song has the potential to be a huge hit, regardless of the video. Try To Make It has much more potential. I think it could be one of those crusin around in the summertime, with the roof down or windows down, with the song blastin and singing along. I think it can be one of this year's summer anthems if it gets promoted enough/properly, like with a GREAT video... and you could certainly make a great video if you take the budget you plan on using for the other All Used Up videos and putting that budget towards the Try To Make It video.
Pffft.... - May 9, 2005 7:13 PM
ALL USED UP IS A GOOD ROCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!
G - May 9, 2005 7:53 PM
Just because you (or I) am a Sloan fan does not mean that there are not levels of goodness and that neither one of us can recognize them. I don't hate All Used Up. Yeah, it's a rocker, but that doesn't mean it's (instantly or near instantly) catchy. Some might even call it good. I think it's okay. But it's not as good as other rockers that the band has released... and, beyond that, who says that the single NEEDS to be a rocker. Seems to me that Chris himself (according to the documentary clips on the dvd) is a bit tired of being expected/having to release rockers because they've traditionally done better. Friendship was a rocker, too, and it didn't do anything on the charts. I think that Friendship and All Used Up are similar in the sense that the hook just doesn't grab the listener (okay, ME) the way that the hooks in MCM, Good In Everyone, Losing Cali (yeah, I know it wasn't huge, either, but it had more potential than Friendship AND All Used Up), all did/could. Please don't be the kind of fan that blindly worships anything/everything about the band and who, consequently, interprets anything that is less than "OH MY GOD I'D MARRY THE GROUND SLOAN WALKS ON IF THAT GROUND WERE A HUMAN BEING, BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MOST SPECTACULAR CONTINGENT OF MUSICIANS AND SONGWRITERS EVER ASSEMBLED, AND THEREFORE THE GROUND THAT THEY WALK ON IS MORE PRECIOUS FOR HAVING FELT THEIR WEIGHT" as being an attack on them, because that's the kind of thinking that Garth Brooks fans get on with, and it's ridiculous.
Dave Read - May 10, 2005 1:01 PM
nicely written G, it's refreshing to see some objectivity online for a change! Just take a look at the singles The Beatles released over their career for an idea of how diverse a 'hit' can be. Not that Sloan hasn't had diverse singles in the past either, but blind hero worship is pretty BS (I'm sure the band themselves would agree on this). I'm looking forward to finally hearing Try To Make It when my CD/DVD arrives in the mail.
Aaron Sherwood - May 12, 2005 1:14 PM
I disagree with G on "All Used Up" being instantly catchy. It definately brought me back to Sloan again, and I've been out of touch with good Canadian "indie" bands since I moved to Florida almost 5 years ago. I think MCM is the best "rocker" that Sloan has released, but AUU definately has that edgy, fast paced groove that a "rocker" should have. I do agree with G's thoughts on the fan praising everything that the band releases as "GREAT". I think the band itself would be the first to admit that some songs are simply better than others, it doesn't mean the songs aren't good. Having been around the guys a few times at several different shows, they are sort of the anti-rock stars, especially Andrew. But I think they would respect a fan more that understands that every song is going to be different and not every song is going to "rock". How many of us have fallen asleep midway through Twice Removed? Sloan has been around for over 10 years and I hope they will be around for 50 more. (just like the Stones) Cheers from Tampa to Toronto!
Miranda - May 12, 2005 2:38 PM
"every song is going to be different and not every song is going to "rock"."
That's what I like about Sloan. A good mix! All Used Up and Try to Make it even things out. A little rock, then something more pop...it's all good ;)
Soooo back to the video...when are we gonna see this? The song has been out for awhile now. Why was a second video made? Hmmmmmmm?
Cort Johns - May 16, 2005 12:20 PM
Murph,
I slipped you the crazy video idea at the Metro in Chicago (recall 'Super Hawks')... Anyways.. I'm always willing to write anew and would be more than happy to show you a cost breakout for a video we could shoot in Chicago on the cheap.
Let me know if you dug my sensibility.
Cort
BTW let me know if you want to take a stab at 'Try to Make it'...
Miranda - May 18, 2005 7:58 PM
The new video is hilarious!!!! Patrick is pimpin' in his fur coat ; )
Hannah - May 18, 2005 10:33 PM
Wow!! The new video is priceless! Good job guys!
Patrick, you are such a prima donna! ;)
TreatmentDude - May 19, 2005 1:05 AM
Here is a treatment idea:
So Patrick, Chris, Andrew and Jay are each pouring over their CD collections. Each one of them is making a mix tape. 4 settings so far - nice. Plus each has different old school equipment they are taping on. And they each put a song off of a Sloan album - smeared (1), twice (2), one chord (3), navy (4), bridges (5), Pretty (6), Action (7)... Now, lets say Chris, Jay and Andrew have all had two songs each on their tapes and they show the cassette reels with next to nothing left. Patrick now looks at his reel and has time left. So he picks up the phone and it looks like he is reasoning out something with someone on his end. Now cut to Andrew hanging up the phone and putting on his jacket. Next scene - Sloan meets up in the studio to ostensibly write a new song to round out Patrick's mix tape. And they just deicde to jam and out comes All Used Up! Then at the end it shows Chirs give his tape to Jay, Jay gives his to Andrew, Andrew gives his to Patrick and Patrick gives his to Chris. All cheesy wrapping paper and kind of nervous gift givers, of course. Group hug. Fade to black.
TreatmentDude - May 19, 2005 1:08 AM
Nervous gift givers like - slightly embarassed - hopeful that the reciever will like it - looking at their feet - shy... You get me?
maria - May 19, 2005 2:06 AM
I heard they made a second video because much music wouldn't play the first one. typical....
Lydia - May 19, 2005 6:15 PM
Group Hug!! Yes!!
Scott Again - May 26, 2005 11:49 AM
Here's a thought:
In Chris and Jay's continued pursuit to be some version of the Rolling Stones, how about (gallows humour here) the Altamont performance a la Gimme Shelter (picture Chris in Mick's red/black ensemble saying "please keep it togevva, people.") or the sailor suits and soap suds a la "It's Only Rock and Roll." Or just the black background and videotape of "Start Me Up."
Oh wait, since it is "All Used Up," why not take a cue from, what was her name? Ya know, Dave Coulier's ex/You Can't Do That on Television alum/ex film patron's video for "8 Easy Steps" and take bits out of all the Sloan videos and reconfigure their mouths to match the words. Nah, unfair comparison there. Alanis (yeah, that's her name) blows (by her own admission in "You Oughta Know"). Sloan rocks!
KashGlenBarn - May 26, 2005 7:51 PM
Y'know, seeing that mention of a racecar video for "All Used Up" brought back memories... I always thought "Hollow Head" could have used a racecar theme for a video... Mind you, they would've _had_ to release it as a single... I still think it would've worked in the US.
The sports stations could still have been playing the song as intro/outro music by now and Sloan would've made $ on the royalties just from that alone...
KGB
who's so rarely here it isn't funny
Miranda - May 26, 2005 9:04 PM
Hollow Head should've been a single ; )
betty - June 13, 2005 6:12 PM
i can't find the lyrics anywhere though
jordan - October 16, 2005 6:57 PM
