In addition to the album poll, Sloan landed 5 spots in the top 50 Canadian songs, with Underwhelmed landing the number 2 spot just behind the Guess Who's "American Woman".

I would have to take it one step further and say Twice removed is the best album of all time :)

That album's AMAZING and the award is definitely welcome after an eight year hiatus...
...yet I believe One Chord to Another is truly the best Canadian album of all time (I know, I know, majority rules, but hey)

A big thanks to Chart for the Sloan-love, and for the really cute & clever cover shot.
An even BIGGER thanks to Sloan for being so kind to the west coast this coming May! See you in San Francisco - I'll be the screaming idiot in the front.

Twice Removed is a great album but so is all of their albums. Please take it easy Sloan and keep doing what you do best.

Anyone have the complete Top 50 list??
Eric - March 3, 2005 5:26 PM
I agree, all of their albums should be contenders for top Canadian album even though Andrew & Patrick might not want to admit it...but I'm kinda obsessed so I could be biased
In my eyes their melancholy-ish material is awesome (ala Twice Removed, Pretty Together, some Action Pact & Smeared tracks), but there is something to be said for the 3 middle albums...they're quirky and positive and have a lot of what makes sloan sloan, at least IMO...you need the good in everyones, the chester the molesters, the 400 metres and the take good care of the poor boys...(wow, this is really a subjective post...sorry about that...guess I'm just trying a little bit too hard to influence the Sloan songwriting process, lol)
Chris - March 3, 2005 9:24 PM
I agree with you Eric. One Chord to Another should of topped the list, but I guess we can't really complain as at least something belonging to sloan is at the top.
Kathleen MacMaster - March 4, 2005 12:29 PM
Someone tell me why I find a lot of people dislike the making of "Pretty Together"? Is it cause it has the most slowest songs? Love the songs "Dreaming Of You" and "Never Seeing The Ground For The Sky."

I'm not sure why everyone doesn't like it Kathleen. I know it's my least favorite album. Out of the 13 songs on the album I was only a fan of about 6 or 7 (If it feels good do it and all of Andrew's songs rocked, and I enjoyed a few others). For me it probably was due to the slower, less rocking songs. I thought Action Pact was a nice rebound in terms of a real rocking record, not to mention a sweet album name.
Eric - March 4, 2005 8:35 PM
Personally I find Pretty Together to be okay when I'm in the right mood. In terms of songwriting, I actually think that album has some of Sloan's best written tracks on it. Still, I guess I'm also prone to liking the rockers, and though there are certainly some on PT I see them as a little sluggish when compared with similar songs on other albums. I also find both Action Pact and Pretty Together to have a few too many (somewhat) cliched lyrics and minor-key songs than I'd like sloan to ideally have, but Action "Pact" at least "packs" a bit of a punch, pardon my pitiful pun (yay i made a tongue twister)
Kathleen MacMaster - March 8, 2005 3:20 PM
Eventhough Action Pact is more of rockin' album, I even seen people disliking this album as much as Pretty Together. God.

Don't worry MKMM! I love all their albums!!! Action Pact was the album I was waiting for them to make!
Ryan Jeffries - March 15, 2005 3:21 PM
What's with all the backlash about Pretty Together? The Other Man may be one of my favourite songs of all time, especially live! Plus the tour they did that year was among the best (til the blue lights from the last one came along) It's In Your Eyes, Who You Talking To?, I Love a Long Goodbye... come on, these songs rock. And with Between the Bridges, there definately could have been at least 2 more singles ( pick from Waiting for Slow Songs, Friendship, So Beyond Me, Take Good Care... etc)
What ticked me off circa 2001, was that there were only 2 singles released. I think the boys from Halifax must be too modest, for these songs would have enlightened many people to the quality of Sloan. But then again, I always complain about the lack of singles from each new Sloan album (and I wonder how Jay and Andrew feel about not having their songs on the radio?). Jay doesn't even drive, so maybe he doesn't have the opportunity to choose the radio station or the cds :)
However, I just thought of this while writing this post: who's to say that Sloan even wants to be on the radio? Maybe being on the radio is a sign of something obscure that we don't know about, so that by not dominating the charts, they are even cooler than all the other bands. Too many bands blow up on radio, then you never hear from them again. But with Sloan, this wouldn't happen, because they are a real band, composed of talented and devoted geniuses, that wouldn't sell out for anything. The inherent quality of their music sets them apart from all the rest, so they are never in danger of losing their coolness.
I dunno, it may be a conspiracy theory, but all I want is for everyone else to have their minds blown by the best band in the world. All the non-Sloan fans I have played their music for immediately become fans and buy their cds. Often they say they didn't know about their non-radio songs, and love these too.
And Action Pact was great too, for those of you who doubt.
Ryan P - March 15, 2005 5:05 PM
Action Pact was (and is) a great album, it's the album that got me hooked on Sloan in the first place. It may not be as musically diverse as some of their earlier ones, seeing as how it lacks pianos and wierd percussion instruments and, most significantly, songs from Andrew. But in my mind, Sloan have always been a rock band, pure and simple, and that's exactly what Action Pact is: a pure and simple rock album.
However, with Pretty Together, something was definatly lacking. If It Feels Good Do It, The Other Man, The Great Wall and Who You Talkin' To? are all kick-ass songs in their own right, however I found that perhaps the boys got almost TOO experimental with that album, relying moreso on elaborate studio technology, rather than the standard guitar/bass/piano/drums, to complete the majority of the tracks.
Don't get me wrong; I purchased Pretty Together with as much enthusiasm as when I bought all their other albums. But you have to admit that, when compared to any one of the band's other albums, Pretty Together just doesn't have that same spark in it.
I will agree with what the other Ryan said, though: Sloan should release more singles, they may not prove to be a great profit, but it's the principal of it, damn it! :P
Ryan Jeffries - March 16, 2005 1:48 PM
It's nice to see someone understood what I wrote yesterday... call me sloan-deprived, rather than crazy. Anyways, Ryan P has a good point about the studio trickery etc. I was looking at their albums as collectively, so that some of the songs from PT stand out, but PT , it must be admitted, is a difficult album to listen to, no offense, but it is still better than most other bands best stuff.

Twice Removed is a great album i remember when i was a little kid listening to it and going to school and the school bus, this was like back in 1996.
scott - March 30, 2005 11:40 PM
my best friend almost killed me when i told him the news, i love sloan, but its hard to tell people any of their albums beat neil youngs harvest without getting a dirty look. i personally like one chord to another best, i think its great they got recognition and i must say neils face wouldn;t look as good on the over of a magazine, and besides he should be happy enough placing in the top 20 greatest canadians...so i guess in all, hooray, sloans coming to peterborough, why the fucking trash though?
Kriss Rites - April 5, 2005 4:40 PM
Rite on guys! Very deserving. I may have picked Navy Blues over Twice Removed...but maybe not

frankly, i agree with some of the comments in the FAQ. after listening to, and buying every one of the albums over the years, i can't understand why the fantastic albums haven't been met with widespread commercial success in the US the holy grail of marketing.
not sure if the band reads this blog but... i think the commercial success is outweighed by how their music has changed the canadian musicscape (if that's a word). and a loyal following in canada is always interested in what new musical turn is around the bend.

"One Chord To Another" is your best work overall from my "critical" point of view. My personal fave is "Pretty Together" for a host of non-critical reasons.
