HOUSTON!!! Or AUSTIN!!!
man oh effing man i'm excited

Julie -

So I'm Canadian but I thought I would let everyone know that I got A Side Wins last Friday and I can't turn it off. The DvD feature is my favorite part, sometimes I just throw on the videos while I'm getting ready for work. By watching all of them at the same time you can really see the art and creative style within them. My favorite videos are The lines you amend, Losing california and The other man (that was hard to decide cause they are all great!) They also have live performances and
history of the videos. This piece of work is all thats keeping me occupied till July 2nd (counting the days till the Kee) So yeah! its totally worth getting...

Formerly from Buffalo, living in Florida for almost 5 years. "A Sides Win" is awesome, highly recommend it. Great new single, "All Used Up"....Great DVD, Patrick showing off his Gibson Les Paul SG and Gretsch Roc Jet. (and his amazing sense of style...) I truly miss all the great Canadian Indie bands that I used to be just a short drive on the QEW away from. Thank you Sloan for continuing to rock, as always! Cheers from Tampa to Toronto!

Dewey Ennis -

Holy God, I found this on Ticketmaster!

http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/842709

Man, that's going to be an intense set of shows. BTW Sloan, if you get to play Atlanta this summer, you're invited to a rocking cookout at my house! Spoke to you a bit at the Tabernacle show last year, you were talking about being weary of road food, So there's the offer, 8)

gammj -

Sloan is not playing with the Strokes. That's an old listing.

Steven Sime -

Thank you Sloan and thanks to the record label for putting out such a great package. The DVD is amazing. I am looking forward to a Chicago date soon. The Metro misses you!

Nick -

The Minus Five? That's the Scott McCoy fronted project that did the album with Wilco about two years ago, is it?

nina -

Yeah! Another Buffalo show! I'll definitely come down to see you boys, again!

DP -

Way to go on the DVD, guys... it's absolutely brilliant!
Please hurry up with the tour dates!

Oh, and I want to put in a plug for the Capitol Years--anyone going to these New York/Philly shows should be sure to get there early to check them out, they're quite good.

Melissa -

Ahh announcing the dates for the shows we already brought tickets for because we are impatient Sloan fans? lol
Ticketweb.com has a lot of dates for sale :)

Ahhhh I can't wait until June 14th!

E.J. -

The DVD...it ROCKS!!! And so do the new tracks. Florida misses you Sloan. At least get close, and I'll make the drive! Detroit 2001 was aweseome...Gotta see 'em again!

Beth -

Finally got my A Sides Win - it's superb, just about perfect. I can finally retire my tattered copy of Second Hand Views with dignity. One suggestion though: listen to Andrew - 20 horses in 'If It Feels Good Do It' would have bought you a Juno.

Also (totally unrelated but it <b>needs to be said!</b>) - what's with the show photo updating?? 1 photo for Calgary but nothing for the shows prior. I know at least 4 people that have uploaded photos that I'm waiting to see.

John Diaz -

Yea, the Minus 5 also features Peter Buck from REM. If I'm not mistaken, Peter Buck and Johnny Marr were two of Jay's biggest influences growing up, so that would have been sureal for him, I would think. amazing. was anyone at that show to confirm?

Hannah -

Ditto Beth's comment above about the show-photo posting, or lack thereof.
Now Waterloo has some posted, but all the others are neglected. :(

The DVD is beyond excellent. It hasn't left my player.

edso -

EH SIDES WIN IN PHILLY ON JUNE 11th!!! Yes, The Capitol Years will be groovin' too. Check 'em out!

Special Thanks to Chris Murphy for helping me put my drunk date into a cab after the Roseland NYC (Jet) show last summer. She just couldn't handle the RAWK that is SLOAN.

Okay, question to all the lucky ducks North of the border RE: the DVD version released there.

According to a poster on Amazon.com, the Canadian release has, in addition to the videos and the alternate videos of "If It Feels Good," "People of the Sky," and "Underwhelmed," as well as the two commercial spots and the band documentary, allegedly the Canadian version has television performances from the CBC on it.

Before I, and I imagine a lot of others down here in Little Big Man, go shelling out the unhealthy US dollars for it on import, is it true? I want to get it, of course, but thought I'd make sure first. I was almost burned by a guy who said the same of the UK version of Live Aid.

P.S. Still really sorry about the election. I tried, we all did.
SS

Dave Read -

Hey SS, I'm also in the US (ex-pat Canadian) and I ordered the Canadian version from MapleMusic.com, believe me it is TOTALLY worth it for the TV/live appearances. You won't believe the '500 Up' live in 1991, it is ridiculous. Chris should seriously bring back the backwards baseball cap look, and Patrick looks like a total bookworm. Jay is pretty grunged out with some great hair shagging. It also looks like they have rugs hanging up behind them. Totally great!

Dave

Beth -

Just gotta compliment you all on the new All Used Up video. LOVE LOVE LOVE; it's quite hilarious, and looks like it was fun to make. Chris & Jay, you wear those bellboy uniforms well, good to know you have a back-up gig should the whole rock star thing not pan out. You're just not parking <i>my </i> car.

Scott Stalcup -

Hey, thanks for the info, Dave, so it must be true then.

Well, that's really nice that the home fans are getting the bonus stuff and the abroad fans are having to track it down. It was bass-ackwards for too long (see the Enclave release of One Chord and the US version of Action Pact). I will definitely go to MapleMusic or Amazon Canada once Mastercard says my payment for this month went through and snag that bad boy. I just wanted to make sure because when Live Aid came out on DVD, posters were saying the UK version had more stuff on it (it didn't) and the same for the UK version of the Muppet Show DVDs (don't exist).

One more question for Dave or another poster who has the Canadian DVD, is the Navy Blues era MuchMusic: "Intimate and Interactive" performance on there? The version of "Deeper Than Beauty" with Chris asking "Does anybody know the lyrics to this? Inside? Nobody. (back into song) That someday you'll just put them on again..." is GREAT!

Still really REALLY sorry about the election. I tried.
SS

P.S. Just a thought, and I mean this in the best possible way because I grew up on the man's music, it was required listening in the 1970s, but can anyone else hear Tony Orlando and Dawn covering "Try to Make It"? There's a definite Latin-influenced melody working through that song. Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent singing the "Never really meant it anyway"s. I'd like to see it happen!

Ryan P -

There is indeed a short clip from the 1998/Navy Blues I&I, but it's of them performing The Lines You Amend only, and there's no dialogue from before or after the song, just the song itself. My favourite live performance of the songs is the one from the 1999 Juno's, when they're performing Money City Maniacs. Chris jeering the audience (which includes Sheila Copps) into clapping and screaming is priceless.

Beth -

Tony Orlando & Dawn!!? Interesting Scott! I'll have to give it another listen.

I still insist Chris was dipping into the Difford & Tilbrook when he penned Try To Make It. The song is seriously Squeeze's "Up the Junction", Sloan-ified. I kid you not. For example, listen to these melodies from both songs and tell me it's not pretty damn close:

<i>"I can do you one better, we'll skip it altogether
And the pleasure will be mine"

vs.

"I got a job with Stanley, he said I’d come in handy
And started me on Monday, so I had a bath on Sunday"</i>

The only way you can differentiate that the later isn't Sloan (or more specifically, Murphy) is because it mentions "having a bath". (*har!*)

ian -

Yeah I agree with the Squeeze thing, the first thing I thought when I heard "Try To Make It" was "Goodbye Girl," but you're right, Up The Junction is a little closer.

Scott Again -

Okay, further anaylsis of the "Sloan-y Orlando and Dawn" parallels in "Try to Make It," if you just hum/whistle the melody and compare it to, say, "Knock Three Times" or "Candida" or another of the group's pre-ragtime phase songs, and then pair that with the content of the song compared to most of the TOaD songs (oh, that's horrible as an acronym, isn't it?) where boy either doesn't get the girl of his dreams or it's left up in the air, yes or no, and there you go. The synth on it might be a stumbling block to hearing it, but keep in mind, I'm a geezer compared to a lot of the posters on here, I'd imagine.

It's not like The Flirts' "Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox" and The Stones' "Brown Sugar" in terms of similarities that way, oh no, but like I said, the song would work well on an early TOaD album.

Too bad about the I & I as that was really enjoyable outside of the too-long (sorry, but it was) version of "Underwhelmed." I would hope for more of that on the DVD.

Well, that settles it though. Out to Sears to pay the card so I can get online this week and order the "CanCon" version of A Sides Win. Big thanks to everyone for answering my question(s).

And still very very VERY sorry about how the election went,
SS

riley -

so, let me get this straight....there are THREE versions of A-Side Wins?!?! I just got the american DVD version, which is great, don't get me wrong, but now my second hand views VHS is obsolete, and i thought there would be live material on it. WRONG. I'm as supportive a fan as the next but shelling out for the canadian DVD, too, will mean owning yet ANOTHER version of 'underwhelmed' i have to skip! sheeesh.....i wish i knew this ahead of time, because purchasing the canadian version through maplemusic is cheaper than what i payed for the american one at Virgin!

Scott Again -

No no, Riley, sorry. As far as I know, and home country fans, correct me on this, but the only bit from the MuchMusic: Intimate and Interactive is the performance of "The Lines You Amend," right?

I was saying that the performance of "Deeper Than Beauty" on that was great, but I didn't care for the version of "Underwhelmed" that was on the I & I performance (it just went on too long and it kind of broke down into nothing). Moot point though, there's only the aforementioned performance on there.

So no, there are only two versions of A Sides Win in terms of DVD content. The US release and the Canadian release. The Canadian release has more stuff on it due to licensing issues and it only seems right that the folks back home get more bang for their buck after getting schtupped on past releases.

Let's play, wakwak!

Scott, Yet Again -

I feel awful pointing this out as apparently based on the name "Marshall Pentland"'s proximity to Sandra's in the acknowledgments that Paddy's a Daddy now (congrats) and his responsibilities are beyond knowing what guitar he's playing down to the model, but he calls his guitar a Les Paul Junior on the DVD, the one he uses in more or less most of the videos/recordings.

I am so sorry for posting this, but that's an SG. Yeah, it's a Gibson, but the red finish and the horns on the sides and all, that's the same make Angus Young and Jimmy Page (although his was a doubleneck) use(d).

Patrick I'm sorry and I hate myself for noticing that. Whatever guitar you're using you could still play my lame arse under the table any day of the week.

Apologies again,
SS

DP -

I wondered about this myself, figuring there was no possible way Patrick would make a mistake on something like that. So I did a little research... and he's indeed correct. If you go here and scroll down the page, you'll find the guitar and some info on its history.

Mikey -

First off, thanks to Scott and the other posters for giving me the heads-up about the extra material on the Canadian version of the DVD. It's very much appreciated. Finally having the Second Hand Views videos on DVD was exciting enough, but to have all those additional performances made me shriek like the little schoolgirl that I'm not. The reason I'm posting, however, is because I'm wondering if anyone else is having problems viewing all of the content on the DVD. I live in the States, but I bought my copy from MapleMusic.com. I am able to view all of the videos in the Video section, but not the "All Used Up" video in the Extras section or about half of the performances in the TV & Live section. Instead of playing those particular tracks, it reverts back to the menu and the icon is sitting next to the next selection. I don't think there's any problem with my DVD player as I've never had any problems with it in the past and most of the content on the DVD plays just fine. Has anyone else had any problems with the DVD? Heard of someone else who has?

Help!

Andy -

SLOAN coming back to the Grog in Cleveland . F*#KING A !!! p.s. the white strobes behind the band blew my mind last time. See you there.
