i've been trying to hear if i can hear a canadian accent in their talk. and chris has the slightest of all slightest accents. and i say it's an accent cause i'm american.
And thank goodness they made Jay do a single. And the reason thy don't really have the thick Canadian accent is because Canadian's don't have accents, we talk normal, it's you Yankees that talk all funny. :) JK, It's probably because they spend too much time in Toronto.
Alex, from my travels across Canada from Victoria to Sydney, I've found that the least pronounced accent (to me, a Californian) is in Nova Scotia and PEI, with the exception of a few words, such as "out" and "about". I found almost a complete absense of the "eh" tag at the end of the sentence that is prevalent in the prairie provinces. Conversely, unless I told Nova Scotians that I was from California, they had no idea I wasn't local. Another reason that I felt so at home back there.
BTW, I preorderd NHTEOI from Maple Music, paid extra for faster shipping, and it STILL isn't here! Arrgh! C'mon! I'm leaving on a four day car trip tomorrow and I want it along to listen to!
Got the new cd. I've stayed up too late too many nights listening to it already, I think it's wonderful. Mind you, I've been finding some of Chris' songs a little ..broody (for lack of a better word), he's probably in love or something. Andrew seems to have made a serious contribution, very welcome cause I missed his songs on A.P.. Like the new single, it's about time Jay has a single again. I had thought/hoped "Fade Away" may have been released as a single. And Jay, you're underrated! Deanne
It took 8 days, but my copy of NHTEOI arrived today! Thank you Maple Music! Just in time too, as I leave on a 1100 mile road trip tomorrow morning!
Question: I see that it's got a cardboard folder instead of the usual plastic case. This a new trend? I just received a copy of Colours by the Chucky Danger Band from PEI and it's packaged the same.
Is Sony/BMG still Sloan's distributor for murderecords?
Not new for Sloan - "Between The Bridges" and "4 Nights At The Palais Royale" were in cardboard cases. Much nicer than plastic cases in my opinion. Lots of Canadian bands are doing it these days.
Jay's songs are amazing on NHTEOI! He's the George of Sloan. Chris' "Everybody Wants You" is good too. Great to hear new material from Andrew. Patrick's always been a classic songwriter here in Canada, and his songs on NHTEOI are awesome. Thank you, Sloan!!
I don't think the Tragically Hip have ever had an album that had a plastic cover. I could be wrong, but I don't own any of them. On the accents, I really don't think there are many places that have much of that Canadian twangy accent. The only place I'll actually notice it is when I'm in the Miramichi. I think it's more about phrases, sentence structures that we use that make it "Canadian". At least that's what they tell me any time in the states. Not that I sound funny, I just talk funny.
Halifax was documented in "The Story of English " as the place with the least accent in the world. In other words, the way English is written. Bland, no local colour. Not better, just easy to understand. Americans love Canadian newscasters -- why? No accent. Pretty much everyone from big cities here in Canada has a very similar lack of an accent. It's only when you stray into the country that you hear any twang.
I don't know. I think this song is the single by default because there aren't really any "singles" Its pretty obvious which songs are the stand outs on the previous albums but on this one there isn't a "If It Feels Good Do It" or "Underwhelmed". It's more of an album oriented listening experience to me.
Hey, I'm from Hamilton and I went went for the slowest mail, and it took a week and a half for me to get my cd from Maple Music!!! (and for the Americans, Hamilton is only a hour out of Toronto). Also, the accent thing....people in Alberta say "hey" and not "eh".....I say "eh" a lot myself....habit....I was told that I have a slight Southern Ontario accent in Regina, Saskatchewan a summer ago....some people in Alberta say Southern Ontarians just sound like Americans....and others don't even notice. (Sorry, I jumped around there a lot....I went to Regina, Saskatchewan for 2 weeks in the summer of 2005, and I worked at a summer camp in Alberta this past summer - that's how I know these things).
Anywho, I am glad to hear a new single from Jay!!! I must state that I did enjoy his songs on all records, including ActionPact and Pretty Together. But this new album, Jay - your song writing blows me away!!!! (rhyme not intended).
Oi, Lisa*! You going to be at the Underground tomorrow night? I'm in Hamilton, too, and I'm SO there to get my Sloanage on! I haven't seen them in a year, so I'm way excited...
Unfortunately, I don't have the new CD yet, so I'm really looking forward to hearing some of the new stuff. The clips I've heard on this site sound awesome! And here's hoping I get a chance to do some sing-along-action to some of the older stuff as well.
Anyways, keep up the amazing work, guys! And congrats on the single, 'eh' Jay! :) Sorry, y'all, but I do say 'eh' from time to time. I also say "y'all" a bit too...apparently... >_>

Congratulations on your single Jay. Nicely done. Way to use the word 'thesis' in a song.

Hey Jay,
All your songs are singles in my books.

Cardboard cases not new in the US either....
Matt Pond PA, Pearl Jam, Elliott Smith...just a few cardboard friendly users across the line.

Jay songs over the years that could--and should--have been singles:
1. C'mon C'mon C'mon
2. Waiting For Slow Songs
3. Take Good Care of the Poor Boy
4. False Alarm
5. Lemonzinger
Yes, Lemonzinger. His vocals are heavenly in that song.
