i was lucky enough to see sloan twice at club quattro in shibuya, tokyo. the tickets were a whopping 5500 yen which is like $70 canadian per show but can you put a price on good times?
there were no openers and no tshirts but that was okay by me because i came for unadulterated pop rock and that was exactly what i got.
there were many young japanese girls and older, fatter expats such as myself hanging out in the lobby before the show, and the vibes were positive all around. we were doing our best to look detatched and i think we succeeded, until chris murphy appeared and we all commenced with giggling and mobile phone photo taking.
the sets on both nights were a nice balance of old and new, although the first night started nicely with a nice "life of the working girl." the second night was tighter than the first but both shows showcased what i like best about sloan which is their propensity for pop rock mayhem.
after the show i made mixtapes for the british friend i brought along and then he hunted down all the records in tokyo's fine record retailers.
i only write this dumbass review because i think you should have seen it through their eyes-the japanese kids' eyes-sloan were big lumbering ROCK STARS from another country and they delivered and it was so good they probably all started bands the next day and isn't that how you used to be, before you got all cynical and folded your arms and furrowed your brows and forgot how to have fun.
so i say they were the best shows i have ever seen of any band, period, and i'm better off for having been there.
