I love when these guys play on or near my birthday. Even though it won't be a full set, it will be wonderful -- it always is. Request: Everything You've Done Wrong, but if it isn't played it will still be perfect. Thanks!
The show was short but transcendent. It was my first Sloan show and great from beginning to end. Before the show, Jay was hanging out in the balcony watching the Everyones. When Sloan hit the stage they rocked through a great 11 song set including high points Money City Maniacs, The Good in Everyone, and Sensory Deprivation (which had the raging Jet fans next to me bouncing around). Chris seemed a little tentatve in his banter -- too much worrying about whether Jet fans would dig Sloan. The Jet freaks I was sitting by asked me what album the first two tunes were off (Action Pact) and ran down in the middle of the set to buy it. So Sloan seems to be winning over some new converts even on the first night. The full setlist was: Ready For You, Live On, The Lines You Amend, I was Wrong, The Other Man, Money City Maniacs, Sensory Deprivation, Rest of my Life, Good in Everyone, False Alarm, If it Feels Good.
After the show, Jay came out to the balcony to watch Jet whereupon the ever-alert HOB security pounced on him and kicked him out! I saw him protest but to no avail. Chris was down in the merch area talking to people during Jet, which was very cool. He said Sloan may be through again in September. I really hope so -- I can't wait to see them headline finally!
In short -- the band needs to stop worrying about this tour and just go out and wipe the place up with Jet. They can do it! Jet was surprisingly mediocre -- their lack of musicianship was really evident last night. Quit worrying about it and rock!
Hey Monz. Quick note on the show last night. When I spoke to Chris afterwards, he said that he had a splitting headache. I think that had more to do with the vibe than worrying about whether Jet fans would like them. Who wouldn't love Sloan?!
I have seen them so many times over the years. There has never been an ounce of trepidation or fear on stage. Just full-on rock and good times. Yet another reason why they are absolutely one of my favorite bands. If you liked last night's show, make sure to catch them when they come back. You'll be blown away. Especially if my psychic powers hold up and I get my wish for She Says What She Means. That songs rocks so hard live!
Against a number of odds (Jet fans, so so sound, what must have been a poor monitor mix, early stage time) it was still a great show and Sloan are one of the few bands I'm willing to see any time they come to town. Thanks for the rock guys.
Last night was my second time seeing Sloan live and I was not disappointed. I was extremely happy that a few older songs were included in the set. I was expecting that they would mainly focus on "Action Pact" material. I had to laugh that both of the opening bands were more entertaining than the headliner. I was not impressed with Jet at all. They should have been opening up for Sloan, a band with talent.
Guys:
My apologies for not chiming in earlier...
The show was great! Obviously a few more songs would have brought down the house, (Something I'm not sure Jet will ever be capable of doing). Glad I got to see you this time around as my ticket went unused for the show at the Metro back in May, (Stuck in Tampa - Dam Ohare Airport Delays, "Chicago Weather Sucks"). It was a pleasure to get the chance to meet you guys after the show. Thanks for the autographs and especially the Great Tunes. My 2 & 1/2 year old daughter is digging the Trading Cards as she's rock'n out to SLOOOAN! Hope that September date comes through. See you then!
