Sloan were great, natch. Providence did *not* represent. Three of us turned out to see our favorite Canadian band, armed with a list of songs to request. But sadly, we were outnumbered by 14-year-old moshers with no skills at all and flanked by Jet fans (?) who clearly don't recognize good music when they feel it. So, we felt bad for the guys, because they put on a hearty, rocking show that should have pricked up ears and set the floor ablaze. Alas, we're certain --at least we hope -- they're finding a better crowd in other cities. And, btw, the new single is phenomenal.
Lupos - 12-Jul-04
When Sloan took the stage it seemed show on their faces that they were playing as non-headliners in a venue packed with kids who did not know their music. Early on, audience reaction was as expected, luke warm. But the band (and especially Chris) clearly would not accept this reaction. Over the course of the (near?) hour they had on stage the band completely won over the audience. By the last three numbers these college kids, who did not know the material, were cheering and screaming as if they had come to see Sloan. I was amazed. At one point my brother, who was at his first Sloan concert, yelled in my ear "These guys are great! I'll go with you any time they come around!"
I would just like to offer the band my most heartfelt thanks for their thrilling performance. Considering how many years they've put in on the road, plus the fact they were not the headline band, plus the fact that the crowd was not with them at the start, the effort they put forth can only be described as amazing. For those of us fans who are out here far removed from Sloan's fan base in Canada, efforts like the one at Lupos on July 12th go beyond simple entertainment, they are inspiring.
Having never heard of Sloan before, I was skeptical at best. From the opening chord to the final bang, Sloan kicked my ass! I have become a Sloan fan and look forward to picking up the new CD. In my honest opinion, Jet was no comparision to Sloan. Great job guys and keep it up!
Sincerely,
Chris

Sloan was awesome. I can to this show to see Jet, but was totally blown away by the band. I loved the interaction with the crowd and all of the songs.
All of the guys are seriously good looking, too! :)
Damn, these guys were great. I went in with low expectations(sorry, but it's true), and once the first song was played I was awe. Sloan is a great band that is bringing back white boy rock. I love Jet, but Sloan's set was more memorable. Keep on kicking ass!
I was at Lupo's on the 12th to see Jet, but I was blown away by Sloan! Being a bit older than the average concert-goer that night (it was an all ages show so there were lots of young ones!) I hung back by the bar. The crowd seemed a bit stand-offish at first, but Sloan quickly won them over! I was a bit distracted by the crowd surfing and the idiot who almost crippled himself, but once they arrested him and took him away I could devote my full attention to the band. I think the band was a bit annoyed with the surfing as well.
This was clearly a group of talented guys who have been playing together for a long time. They were tight, right on and sounded incredible! I read about the punk rock background of some of the group - I love 70s & 80s punk (more mainstream than hardcore) and I think that is why Sloan's sound really appeals to me. Plus, I am a huge Rush fan, so I guess Canadian bands just do it for me!! So count me in as new Sloan fan!! Jet was great as well but I really feel like I got two shows for the price of one! Now I'm off to order a CD or two!
Hey Sloan was fucking awesome on this show!, I enjoyed all your songs and I think you should come back AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!

While at a summer program at Brown U., I decided to go to the Jet concert just for the heck of it. Little did I know I would be introduced to a band I consider to be above the rest. Seeing and hearing Sloan was like something out of a dream. I realized, this is what good music is and this is what I need to look for. I remember seeing Jay Ferguson with these amazing light effects revolving around him. Not remembering the next day if there actually were light effects though, I think its possible their music is so amazing, that I just imagined something so spectacular. Sloan, you guys are true musicians.
