Loved me some Sloan last night. No, I never seen him live before. No, I dont know the names of them boys. And I ain't particularly thrilled about them being from Canada which means they're taking away the jobs of American rock stars who have to go back to Best Buy put on their badge that says "Kenny" and try to sell you some rad new JVC speakers, dawg.
But I'll be dadgummed if them fellers weren't good. Dang good. REAL dang good. Like, so good that they ought to move to Nashville, buy 'em some new hairgel and starve to death and get really angry at the music industry like every Tom, Dick and Huang Ho living round these parts.
Now, I ain't the kind that writes down set lists. That's fer people who bring notebooks to rock shows. But I'll say this: They played a lot of songs from this new record. They played a lot of songs from their old records. Heckfire -- they plumb near played two hours. They played and played and played. They played good, too. So good that people in Nashville -- who ain't the most accomodating sort even though they tell folks "Nashville is the Athens of the South!" and then have to remind themselves they mean "Athens, Greece," not Athens where R.E.M. is from -- actually got close to the stage and even BOBBED THEIR HEADS. Nashville has a zoning ordinance that prevents crowds from getting too close to the stage so that the musicians won't be harmed.
The crowd? Like my daddy says, "Some folks get it and some folks don't. Try to stay away from the people who dont. Now get your pecker out of the light socket." They seemed good. I counted about 100 or so. Which ain't big but it ain't bad for a Nashville on a Wednesday.
Great freakin' show! My ears are STILL ringing from Jay's Hi-Watt! Loved the encore too! Tell you what, the fans down here in the South are DIE-HARD fans!
And if I didn't have to drive 2 1/2 hours to get back home, I would have stayed to chat with the band!
Come back soon!
I was there and introduced to Small sins as the warm up. They were great. Sloan was a bit too loud. We had to move back -way back my ears were ringing. They started with "live like that " I was thrilled!! It was wednesday - Rock in a country town. But really interesting crowd.
I'm glad I went!!
