Review of Show in Detroit MI by Jason D. Flinkman

My first Sloan show as well. Of course, they were grand. I dug "Life of a Working Girl" with only Chris's vocals and Andrew on the keys...good stuff.
There were a bunch of stupid girls behind my friends and I screaming to hear "*Murder* City Maniacs" all night and spilling beer on my wife. I hope they woke up in a pool of vomit (not necessarily their own). Fools.

You guys were so much better than the Strokes. You should have been the headliners. You guys rock, totally awesome show. You have true rock n' roll stage presence.

This show was awesome! It was our first opportunity to see Sloan in concert and we were not disappointed. Chris was so friendly and even autographed my pocketbook at my request...

Review of Show in Toronto, ON by Lisa S*

This was not only the first (& only, SO far) time that I've seen Sloan, but it was my first concert EVER. (Yeah, I'm a younger fan, 16). I'm from Hamilton, & Sloan don't play here a heck of a lot & I was dying to see them. I had already missed them open for Oasis at the Molson Ampitheatre, because I had nobody to go with! Can you imagine??? I don't think you really want to. It's too frustrating.
But when I heard that Sloan were opening for the Strokes, & my friend Alicia loves the Strokes & SHE didn't have anyone to go with... we put 2 & 2 together & had a plan. We went, & had a blast! The Strokes were pretty good, but SLOAN kicked major ass! My pal Alicia even said "I now have respect for Sloan" after their set. She didn't know much about them before, but when she said that, it meant something. (She's more of a punker than a pop-rocker like yours truely.)

Unfortunately, with a crowd that was mainly there to see The Strokes, & I, as an amature concert-goer, I neither got up, nor danced OR even brought a camera because the venue info. at ticketmaster.com said that cameras weren't allowed. (Yeah, I'm that honest. When I heard that people sneak in cameras all the time afterwards, I was basically hitting my head against the wall. I was in the centre of row 16! Man, I fuming.) BUT, I was singing along at the top of my lungs & tapping my foot to the beat. Ya I know, I STILL should have stood up.* Ready for You & Reach Out were a pleasent surprise. And Sensory Deprieviation!!! That made MY night! They did only play songs from Between the Bridges & Pretty Togther, but Chirs informed the audience about this politely before they started. I was a bit disappointed, but recovered very quickly out of excitement. Can you REALLY blame them though? Can you imagine how many times they've played Money City Maniacs & Underwelmed??? A LOT, so they have my understanding anyway.

Well, I absolutely FELL IN LOVE with SLOAN's live performances & hope to see them again. Unforunately, I had to leave RIGHT after the show because it was a weeknight (ya know, school & all) & I didn't get to meet ANY of the rockin' guys from SLOAN!!! But, on the way out my friend & I were chanting "SSLLOOOOAAANNN" back & fourth with this other group of people until we couldn't hear each other anymore. (This was on the way out to the parking lot -- we were walking in the opposite direction of the other group of people.)

All & all, SLOAN totally kicked ass & you could tell that their years of playing has really paid off, specifically in their live performances. To SLOAN: I hope to see you guys in Hamilton or Toronto soon! I got the new album "Action Pact" on Tuesday & it's AWESOME!!! You guys have really expanded yourselves as individual artists & as a band. As an owner of all of your albums I could tell that you guys were trying out some new techniques in your singing, song writing & instrument playing. ***Best of luck with the new album, & always*** SLOAN ROCKS!!!

Review of Show in Vancouver BC by Justin R

Danko Jones was a goofball.. I am glad I never hear of him anymore. Anyways, The Vogue was a decent venue, but not enough room to stand in front of the stage (and the closer I can get, the better). Who wants to sit down for all those rockin' tunes? AAaahhh ... Anyways, The Starfish Room was much better; too small, and it's gone now. So sad. I hope you come back to the Croatian Cultural centre one day, because that was the best Sloan show I've ever seen!!! (for Navy Blues)

Review of Show in Vancouver BC by Nikki Hoshal

Sloan @ the Vogue Theatre
Feb, 2000?

I thought it was a really good show, though I wasn't particularly impressed with Danko Jones. I found him just too much, like, I really don't care how sexy YOU think YOU are,....but whatever. He did his best to interact with the crowd, and get everyone pumped up for sloan. I found his music really all similar, loud, and simple, but perhaps if I hear it a bit more it may grow on me.

Sloan I thought, was in fine form. Some of the levels on the mics were a little low, the only people I could really hear were Chris and Patrick, but I guess it also depends on where you are standing.

The set list was great, I liked hearing all the new stuff again, since when I saw them last in October the material was still *fairly* new to me. The 2 Japanese bonus tracks were great, but the crowd wasn't really into them. I actually found that a lot of the people around me didn't know much of the BTB material at all, I felt kind of weird being the only one singing it. Perhaps they were old fans who haven't delved into the new stuff yet. I don't know,......

Chris put up with a lot of hassling during "Summer's my season"- like people yelling other songs that they wanted him to sing, and piping up a lot during the song, since it is so quiet with just the keyboard. I found this particularly rude, but perhaps I was just too into what he was singing :)

There were a couple of crowd incidents, but overall everyone was EXTREMELY well behaved. I was not pushed around at all, which was SO nice, since I am a small person with no crowd skills..... at one point, some guy hopped up on stage, and walked towards the back stage area,...but he was promptly thrown off the front of the stage,...who knows why he did that- the guys all looked at each other, but the show went on, they just had these really surprised looks on their faces. Later, another guy, who was shirtless, decided to run up on stage and put a note on the drum kit for someone to read, and he also was hurled (literally) off the stage by security, straight onto the floor beside me, and right into a poor girl standing beside me- I felt bad for her, but she wasn't really hurt.

There was a lot of bantering between Chris and Patrick during MCM, (heyo!!!) but it was all in good fun. Our side was dubbed by Chris as the side that came to see Jay, with our backpacks full of presents and teddy bears.....or something to that effect, and for this reason we were all wimps and would not be the louder side. And of course Patrick had the side with the guy with no shirt, so that gave him the advantage......It was all in good fun!!

Overall, I thought that it looked like the guys were really enjoying themselves, and I had fun watching them enjoy themselves. The set -up being general admission at the Vogue really alarmed me, but it all seemed to work out well,...so I was proven wrong!!

well that's all my little head can remember at the moment, but I may have some after thoughts :)

Review of Show in Vancouver, BC by Nikki Hoshal

Snow Jam
False Creek, Vancouver, BC

Just a mini review, well not much of a review at all. Sloan played last night at the Molson Snow Jam event here in Vancouver. There was skateboarding, bmx biking,...etc...and lots of merchants around the area, so people just didn't hang out in front of the stage waiting for each band to come on. Sloan played second to last,...in front of only Matthew Good (of course), who from this point on, I think I should call "Demi-GOD of Vancouver". It's like that guy can do no wrong these days......whatever.
Anywho, Sloan came on just after 8pm,...The set went something like this (I may be missing some songs):
The Good in Everyone
Coax Me
New song (titled "Pick it up,..and dial it"?)
Another new song (sung by Chris, but I can't remember the name)
So Beyond Me
Sensory Deprivation
Snowsuit Sound
New song ("The other guy (or man?)")
Money City Maniacs
Chris gave the audience a little history of Sloan, telling them that they have 5 albums, and a new one on the way, and they were trying out some new material. For one of the new songs, he mentioned that it was a song that no one would know, but that's ok, because one day, when it is a HUMONGOUS hit,....we could all look back and say "remember when they played that song at Snow jam before the cd was released? That was cool".....he finished off with "um,..but it probably won't be, so never mind".
All the new songs Sloan performed were sung by Chris. I am really bad at remembering set lists and names, so please forgive the mistakes above, if anyone else on the list was there. The first new song, Chris dedicated to Nardwuar,..who was in the audience. Chris went on a little rant about how some people think that rock and roll is dead (which is kinda what the song is about),.....and said that he wanted to dedicate the song to Nardwuar, because he knew how to ROCK. Then there was some comments about the crowd not knowing how to rock, except Nardwuar, which I thought were a little unnecessary.....even if the crowd did consist of mostly drunken teenagers.
Overall, Sloan sounded pretty solid. The guitars were good, the bass was good, most of the vocals were strong too. I am looking forward to hearing the new cd - as Chris emphasized, it definitely should ROCK! Oh, and for the fashion conscious Sloan fans, the piece of clothing I was least fond of had to be Patrick's BRIGHT YELLOW shirt. You know, good looking guys can usually get away with certain fashion "f'aux pas" but I was NOT diggin' the shirt.

Note: Sloan lurker please ask Patty to ditch the shirt :)

Jay was wearing a really nice Expo '86 shirt....base ball T style, with white body, blue writing and blue arms. To me this was a subtle acknowledgement that he was in Vancouver now, and had also been in Vancouver for Expo '86,...awww nice! Thanks Jay.
Overall, I really don't like these sorts of events, because I think that they attract people who just want to get wasted, and be rowdy in the crowd, and don't really care about the music......But perhaps I am just too old :) Though, I was surprised to see more people that I thought I would singing along to "snowsuit Sound" in the crowd,...so I should give the people of Snow Jam some credit, perhaps they were Sloan fans.
ANYWAYS (way too long here, Nikki, cut it off.....), I am totally looking forward to seeing Sloan again in their own concert, with their own fans. It's been quite a while....I hope all of you guys seeing them later on this Molson thing have a great time.
cheers,
nikki

Review of Show in San Francisco, CA by Nikki Hoshal

Sloan - Slim's in San Francisco
June 25, 2002

Question: What does a girl do after (unfortunately) having to watch her favourite band open up for Sum 41 in a crowd of 16,000 screaming, moshing 16 year olds kids?

Answer: She takes a 14 hour road trip from Vancouver to San Francisco to see her favourite band play in front of 300 totally civilized and pleasant people.

Yes, for those that care, I took a trip down to the lovely city of California to watch Sloan play at Slim's on Tuesday. It was a GREAT night; I met some very awesome people from this mailing list, and also saw a fantastic show. The band sounded really good from where I was standing (in the second row), but the vocals were a little low in the mix. Apparently Jay was having a bit of an off night, and at one point his mike just stopped working, so they skipped one of his songs and came back to it later.

I have to comment on the set list, because it really surprised me. I heard songs that I had not heard them play in ages. It goes as follows, forgive me if I missed any (and this is in NO order except as I was pulling them off the cd's):

Underwhelmed (encore)
Penpals
I hate my Generation
People of the Sky
Coax Me
I can feel it
The Good in Everyone
Everything you've done wrong
The lines you amend (encore)
Keep on Thinkin'
Money City Maniacs
The NS
So Beyond Me
Don't you Believe a Word
If it feels good do it
In the Movies
The Other Man
It's in your eyes
Great Wall
Life of a Working Girl (encore)
I love a long goodbye
Your Dreams have come true

I was really surprised to hear "I hate my Generation" as I have actually never seen it performed live. Also hearing "The NS" and "Don't you believe a word" were really surprising as well, as they were kind of dumped from the set lists shortly after the release of Between the Bridges.

"I love a long goodbye" was one of my favourites of the night, and it was nice to see Jay playing acoustic guitar. Pat also played acoustic on "Your dreams have come true". "Life of a working girl" was the first song of the encore and consisted of Chris singing, and Andrew playing keyboards. Chris was good enough to pose for some cheesy type pictures while draped over
Andrew and the keyboard?..but that's to be expected.

But enough of the music content, let's get into the appearance of the band, because I know that is what you are all wanting to hear about :)

Patrick is currently doing some funky "I-am-too-lazy-to-cut-my-hair-or-use-styling-products" hairdo right now, which I am not too fond of. He was dressed all in black (no surprise
there), and was pretty non-interactive with the audience.

Andrew has cut his hair, and is still sporting the grey look, but it looks good. My 2 friends that I brought with me from Vancouver spent the night enjoying the HOT dude that was playing drums.

Jay was wearing his Penn state tshirt, and was looking a little bit shaggy with the hair himself (but not at all like Patrick). Jay did not appear to be too happy during the show, but commented later to me that the sound was not good for him.

Chris was sporting his classic mullet (what else would he do with his hair), ripped up jeans, and tshirt. He was very energetic (again, what else is new) and a total camera hog?..but I didn't mind!

As for the crowd in San Fran - it was awesome. There was no pushing or shoving, just lots of people bopping around to the music, and having a good time. God, I can't think of too much more to add, except that it was a great experience, and I am so happy that I decided to make the effort to go.

Of course we were getting the reputation as the "crazy Canadian girls" all night,?but I don't mind that much either :)

Cheers,
nikki
