I was at the Red Deer show on Friday the 26th. Being a long long time Sloan fan but never having had the chance to see them live (due to living overseas most of their appearances in Alberta) I was super excited to see them. The band for the most part delivered - the venue on the other hand was horrendous. I got the feeling that the band was like "What the f*&% are we doing here?" but still worked their asses off to give a good show. The venue and the vibe was definately off though. I ended up feeling quite bad for the band the entire night as there really weren't more than 200 people there - mostly diehards up front and a few really drunk halloween revelers. I felt they deserved alot more of a response and crowd. I left feeling like if I really want to see these guys rock it - I need to go to a show in TO or Halifax to see it happen.
When they were on - they were really on - mostly hits from A sides win and Chris Murphy's voice is gold - without a doubt.
Excellent experience just to see the depth of talent and musicianship - next time you guys come to RD though PLEASE book at another venue - somewhere where you will get the crowd and vibe you deserve.

Well, I was one of the lucky 200 or so in the know in the shiny rhinestone buckle of the bible belt. Firstly, I want to thank Sloan and the Yoko Casionos for playing in this pit stop of a town. Secondly, I'd STRONGLY consider firing your booking agent... Or at least give him/her a stern talking to, just to make sure that this kind of "mistake" doesn't happen... again... ever. That being said, as this was my eigth time seeing you live, it was still a pleasure, albeit a guilty one. You definately deserved more than the flourescent lighting and dominos that you got back stage, not to mention the luke warm reception, scissor kicks et al... But for those few "diehards in the front" (I'm sure I've been called worse by better) it was almost like you were playing just for us... and for that, it was ALL worth it. The wierd looks from the baby sitter as we stumbled in, the horrible gin hangover, the loss of my voice for three days after... But I have Jay's pick, a completely signed set list (even Gregory!) and a picture from a 2004 show signed by my rock and roll boyfriend... not to mention this goofy grin that sneaks onto my face every time I think about that show.
It never would have happened at any other show, and I know it won't ever happen again... At least not in this one horse town.
