Awesome to see that show down there!! The guy next to me was like 'you should really stick around for these guys'. I can't believe Patrick was BUYING a drink after the show...no it wasn't a Molson or Labatt. See you in Philly, Chi and GR.
This wasn't a showcase to miss and Sloan was just 1 of those reasons. I also came to see Robyn Hitchcock (funny, surreal, and a great songwriter, of course). He's also lucky enough to have Peter Buck from REM as one of his friends and backing musicians. Sean Nelson from Harvey Danger provided backing vocals.
Dirty Dog Bar is a modest sized bar so I arrived early enough to watch one of the earlier bands and get a good spot at the front. I anticipated a good sized crowd for Robyn and it remained packed for Sloan. There were some minor sound problems which is unfortunately is a fairly common occurrence during SXSW. Poor Andrew had amp problem when playing guitar and kicked his amp. It startled Gregory a bit as it looked like it was about to fall towards him but it did not. And there was blood...only just a little as Andrew had also cut a finger. Despite those events, I think that the audience had a great time and it was nice to hear a couple of older tunes like Penpals. I'm certainly not stuck to a particular album as I find the new record to be absolutely addictive :-).
