Although I'm a huge fan of Robertson Davies, Alice Munro, Atom Egoyan, and the Canadian theatre scene, I didn't clue in to Sloan until marrying my husband five years ago. He's been hooked on Sloan's peculiar brand of power-pop since the mid-1990s, and even insists on joining in the handclaps when he listens to the band's discs. We were thrilled to learn that Sloan would be performing at The Intersection. Although disappointed in the brevity of the set (one hour by my watch), and the fact that the guys failed to honor my requests for the tune "If It Feels Good Do It" from "Pretty Together," I thought that Sloan more than lived up to its reputation as a great live act. Although Patrick seemed introspective, Chris, Jay, and Andrew brought energy and enthusiasm to the set, which included a smattering of songs from the prolific quintet's seven albums. Fans were hyped to hear "Pen Pals," "I Hate My Generation," "People of the Sky," and other faves from the '90s. Multi-instrumentalists all, the guys breezily swapped out guitars, basses, and drum kits as if playing a game of musical hot potato, and took turns on vocals. Andrew's voice has always been my favorite in an accomplished group of vocalists: unfortunately, the sound was sub par at the venue, and it was hard to hear him when he sang. The turnout for the show was pathetic for a band of Sloan's calibre. After all, these adorable guys write all of their own material, play a multitude of instruments, and have vocal chops across the board. Where else would you want to be on a Sunday night? Perhaps the paucity of the crowd is why Chris excused the band after only one encore, claiming that they "had a curfew." Or maybe it's a Canadian thing.

Great show. Lots of Andrew and Jay. And what was wrong with Patrick? He seemed a little under the weather. Hope he gets well soon. Thanks for making yourselves available after the show, too. Keep up the good work. Sorry the crowd was so small. I guess Grand Rapids hasn't quite gotten the Sloan thing yet the way Detroit has.

Great show, guys. The more I think about it, the more concerned I am about Patrick. He doesn't appear very interested. He appears very uncomfortable. Let's hope it's just a matter of being temporarily ill and not something bigger. Sloan must live on, so try to keep it together, guys.

Sloan played to about 50-75 people in a huge room. I have been a fan since Smeared, but first time seeing the band. Andrew Scott is the secret weapon. He is incredible. Enjoyed the set.

Another great outing. Sloan played a nice mix of tracks off of the new album as well as many of the classics.
I was really glad to hear Don't you believe a word. Always a favorite.
Was Patrick sick? He might have only sang during his part on Flying High Again. As a result, sadly, no Money City Maniacs.

I enjoyed the set as well, although it was much shorter than many of their shows I have been to before. It was great to hear so much stuff from Twice Removed and other older albums. Does anyone have a set list??

I can't believe the ONE time I missed Sloan coming to MI they played my favorite song, "Don't You Believe A Word." This is unacceptable! Also, everyone saying things about Patrick being uninterested...that's scary! You can't break up! Please just let these all be rumours!
